Cliffs: Cheap nuclear power on a community by community scale. Eco friendly.

the 'not in my backyard' argument is gonna be the main one. It's the greatest thing since sliced bread till they want to put it near you, then it's a horrible dangerous disaster waiting to happen.

Actually I think terrorism is the deal breaker. Whether it's a foreign terrorist or a domestic terrorist like Oklahoma City... It would be foolish to put our necks out and build something that if it were to be attacked, a very large area will be uninhabitable basically forever. Not to mention the huge casualties.

Not to mention that nuclear waste lasts forever, can be made into bombs, is vulnerable to terrorist attack in of itself, and we don't really have anywhere to store it. Here in Utah they're having a huge debate because Italy wants to pay us to take their waste.

There's plenty of safer alternatives.

I think that eventually the crap is going to hit the fan, and there's going to be a very immediate need. At that point, the only way to make huge amounts of power relatively quickly is going to be to put up nuclear plants.

I'm not too worried about where the power comes from; most of the usual arguments don't bother me. I don't fear the waste or danger of nuclear, I am not bothered by the environmental consequences of fossil fuels (which are all going to get burned eventually anyway, people won't stop when there's still more dinosaur juice available), I don't think windmills or solar panels are ugly, etc. I just look at it pragmatically...conceptual arguments and fears will disappear in a big hurry when computers, televisions, phones, refrigerators, and ovens stop working.

The article was saying that there would be very little material in the reactor, and that it would be unable to be used as a weapon in its form - it would need to be highly refined to the point that terrorist organizations would not have the resources to do it.

You also have to consider that once the reactor is burried and grass is planted over it nobody would be able to tell its there. Depending on cost I wouldn't hesitate to put one in my own backyard. It'd be nice to install something like that and be free of electric bills for the next 25 - 50 years.
