how to disable DRL on a 97 prizm

i just bought the car for 1250, base model, 3 speed automatic.

is there a fuse to take out to disable the DRL?

I disabled mine pretty easily by using info from www.lightsout.org they are really adimate about doing away with DRLs which I don't feel that strongly about but there is some good info there.

I looked too and didn't see much.

it may benefit you to join their little club there just long enough to find out how to disable your DRLs. in essence you would be helping their cause because you would be getting rid of yours.

*edit*
I found this, it ain't much but maybe some more places to look.

nevermind, i got it. its a relay that i pulled.

how much energy does these pull? and how much mpg will it drain, like less than 1/2 a mpg or so>?

Are the DRLs for that car half-intensity high beams, as on so many other cars?

According to sylvania.com your car uses 9005 high beams. Also according to sylvania.com 9005s use 65 watts each. At half-intensity, that would be 65 watts total energy usage. That's 0.0871664358 horsepower.

Can anyone finish the calculations and guess what effect that has on fuel economy?

GasSavers_BEEF 11-10-2008 07:25 AM

not sure of the calculation but the increase is very small. I figure tenths at most of an MPG. I did mine about the time the weather started getting cold so I haven't seen any gains, only losses (all due to cold temps).

I did watch my engine load while doing mine. before the disable, I was running 24-25 (teetering between them) and also 28-29 with my lights on (like in the rain) after disabling them, it is hittin 23-24. there is a difference, just not much.

I look at it as not much but it was free to do and a few more "not much"s will equal out to a descent amount. that's rednek math there.

Its a start. Look at some one like Basjoos. Just think, in a few years, your car could be like his!

GasSavers_BEEF 11-11-2008 04:59 AM

I don't think I would go that extreme. I think he is going to run into issues if south carolina ever requires inspections (they didn't used to, maybe now they do).

in all honesty, my car looks a lot different now than it did when I first joined and yes it will probably get worse...or better, depending on the way you are looking at it.
