New Tax Policy

https://www.dhonline.com/articles/200...aaa02_road.txt

Here we go again. The legislature is talking about a gas tax and/or toll hike here in Massachusetts. But the State of Oregon takes the cake. They learned that as drivers buy efficient vehicles, they pay less gasoline tax.

So, in addition to a 2 cent gas per gallon tax increase, the Governor of Oregon wants to institute a 1.2 cent per mile tax so that people who avoid taxes by buying hybrids, EVs or PHEVs still ante up.

So, there goes Orergonians' incentive to buy hybrids and use less petroleum......................}>POOF<{

I hope Taxachusetts doesn't figure this one out soon.

Odometer hacking will be worth big bucks!

Oh you know how it's going to go here. Those (eastern) that use the toll road and bridges want a gas tax increase instead of a toll increase. Those (western) that don't use the toll road or toll bridges want a toll increase. So dollars to donuts we'll get both, an increase in tolls and an increase in state fuel tax.
A per-mile tax for MA? Will that be solely for miles driven on Mass roads? NH commuters exempt? My Yellowstone vacation miles are not? A per-mile tax might work in a larger state where the border is hours away, but not in these Balkanized colonial Puritanical back-waters we call home.

Yikes!

I just realized how regressive this Oregonian tax will be. Say you hypermile your Civic to 40 miles per gallon. At 1.2 cents per mile, that's the equivalent of 48 cents per gallon!

And a Hummer getting 10 mpg will be taxed at an equivalent of only 12 cents per gallon.

Crikey!

what a shame

florida WILL be raising taxes as budget issues start to mount. and why not, even before this recent downturn in the economy they were ALREADY increasing them AND creating new ones.

this is just a reminder that the fair tax MUST be passed. it's not perfect, but in can be tweaked over time. all the dead beats that do not pay taxes will be FORCED to pay! this is a major player(non-payers) in raised taxes, certainly along w/ govt's drunken sailor spending.

Snax likes to jab at the republicans, so...other than VERY the few that support it, the democrats ARE in fact blocking it.

the older i get, the more i am convinced that our taxes that "help" the needy are greatly(mostly) unnecessary. in my view, the poor state of the economy has exposed individuals that do not want to help themselves or cannot think and act logically(in regard to hard work and finances).

and to boot, the ones that need help, can't get it because the system is so strained. i could go on about the lack of integrity in the work force that is literally killing US comapnies, but THAT is another thread.

Every car will have a transponder installed by the state so they can track the car where ever it is. So when you go out of state you won't be taxed by your home state. But wait, then every state will tax on this system and you will have to send tax money to whatever state you drove. Just like the pro sport players have to pay income tax for whatever they earned while playing in that particular state. The state will not care about the odometer because of gps. Do you think the state will "trust" us or our cars to be accurate? Think again. Then if you happen to have a car with no transponder and they catch you driving on the roads then ZAP the laser cannon in the sky will take care of these cheaters. Oh, ya Happy New Year!

That's not limited to pro sport players. Anyone making income in another state is liable for that state's income tax (for that income). If they can't track it then they'll never know, but try doing construction on government jobs in CT when you live in RI and work for an RI company...that CT tax department is pretty nasty. At least RI is decent about it and credits you for the tax paid to CT so you don't pay twice for the same income.

Now I work in MA for a MA company and live in RI. I have to file in both states.
