No gauge needed, use a tape measure. The standard link length is 1/2 inch. Line up a pin with the 1 inch line (more accurate than the zero end of the tape). Look at the 8, 8 1/2 or 9 inch mark to see if the associated chain pin also lines up. If the pin is more than 1/8 inch from the tape line where it should be, replace the chain.

Gauges are so much sexier though.....I do know the inch rule but I am too lazy to do it.

So I am at 600 km and will see if I can get one ride in this coming week (I have to go away for 4 days to a conference at Whistler BC).

Digital calipers are sexy, cheap, and useful for other stuff besides high-precision chain wear measurement.

Good idea, I could use that on brake calipers and other things too...

Didn't manage to ride at all last week but three rides this week looks on the cards.

Two down one to go. Damned wind was fickle today, in my face one minute and pushing me along the next. The ride home was pure headwind! 702 km total in 2009.

Friday was better. I averaged 30 km/h on the way in despite a headwind and smoked by another commuter cyclist, who responded but could not keep the pace up! <evil laugh>

I was sightly quicker today, like a minute over a ~50 minute ride.....after 800 km I am starting to get into shape.

And I... well, I slacked off in May. Monthly miles are 120 and a few tenths.
Good ride this morning however. I felt good (after a week off...). I was surprised to see that the speedo was reading 28 mph a stretch where I usually barely make 22.

Mike T 06-03-2009 07:12 PM

Average speed today was 30.4 km/h on the 26 km ride into work, including two dead stops for freakin' stoplights. It was 35 C (95 degrees F) on the ride home, unusual for here.

Mike T 06-06-2009 02:11 PM

I had a better ride on Friday: 31.9 km/h average speed (20 MPH) and felt like I had a lot more there. I hope to hit over 34 km/h on this 26 km ride this year sometime. It should be possible......

My bike speedometer is one of these self-stopping and starting ones so if (more like, WHEN) I hit stoplights, the average speed and elapsed time suffers a bit more than it did when I had the manually operated one a couple of years back.
