BMW uses nonstandard tire valves?

On the way into work, I happened to take a look at a BMW SUV sitting next to me at a light. It did not appear to have the regular schrader valve on the wheel. There was no valve stem. The mushroom like cap mounted directly to the wheel. Do you have to take a BMW to a dealer, or buy special equipment, to check and adjust tire pressure?

Oh that's just to stop you from using other than BMW approved air, collected in the Bavarian Alps. It's not all that bad if you buy it on eBay rather than the dealer, then it's only $37.99 for a 4oz can.

j/k I don't have a clue.

Interesting. Some manufacturers might have weird-looking valve stems that integrate the TPMS sensor, but that sounds different.

They might have the system that allows the stem to retract into the wheel itself, creating a flush, lavish, wheel weight free look to the outer edge of the rim.

it's probably just a stubby valve stem with an odd cap.
