MPG Data Not Adding Up

Was looking at Scion iQ fuel data. Its around 35MPG for Scion and lower 40's for Toyota. How can this be? I assume the Toyo's are in Europe/Japan. Is the conversion not working out right? If this is the case, what about vehicles like Ford Fiesta that are sold in North America and Europe under same name and brand? Would those average MPGs be skewed one way or the other?

We convert everything for display here at Fuelly depending on what you have selected under the Fuelly logo. So even if someone is reporting in Europe, you will see the mileage they get in US MPG if you have those units selected.

I guess the driving habits of the European motorists can explan the roughly 5 mpg average disparity of the Scion iQ sold in America to the Toyota iQ sold in the rest of the world which is the same car. I don't doubt it. I just wish I could explain it.

No, Europeans get different motors and transmissions, including a diesel and a 6-speed manual. Americans get no choice, we have to take the CVT and 1.3l gasoline.

Thanks. That explains a lot. I read a review stating the American and Euro versions were identical.

Dont forget, fuel in Europe is around $8 to $10 a gallon, so people probably try harder to use less. Speed limits are generally lower too 70 MPH on the highway in most cases, and 95% of people in Europe prefer manual transmissions too. Not to mention the emission regulations here become stricter by the day.

Talking of the Feista, Ford have recently remapped the engine and changed the gear ratios so it gets close to 90 MPG now.

90 mpg?!! Is that the European diesel/hybrid/solar Fiesta?!

pb 04-30-2012 06:22 AM

MNaccentdriver, yeah I think Draigflag is talking about the diesel Fiesta ECOnetic. This article mentions it gets 85.6 UK MPG which translates to 71.3 US MPG.

Also be aware that the NEDC test cycle reports higher MPGs than the EPA (after taking into account the difference between UK gallons & US gallons).

35 miles per US gallon is approximately 43 - 44 miles per UK gallon.
