Bought a 1991 Civic Si (pics)
Hey gang ! First post !
Recently in October 2009, I managed to finally buy a really clean 1991 civic si. I had been haggling with the owner since January 2009... There were only 2 previous owners, with the 2nd owner only keeping the car for 2 years and putting less than 5,000 kms on the car. Believe it or not, the original owner was a gentlemen here named Bill Gardiner of Motoring TV television show on TSN here in Canada. I managed to get a hold of him through email right after I bought the car. He told me it was never winter driven, stored in heated garage every winter, and had no body or paint work. He used it for long trips to his cottage in Ontario Canada and Florida as well. Most of the time it sat in his mechanics shop covered. The second owner who bought it in 2007 only put 5,000 kms in 2 years. The car is in amazing condition ! It currently has 108,000 kms or 66,000 miles. Mechanically it's all original including the original 19 year old Honda muffler ! I had sent the shows host some pics of the car in its current state, for an episode of the TV Show Motoring TV here in Canada. Heres the clip via Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6HtNC2i42U Anyways, heres a few exterior pics a day after I got it to my house. https://img376.imageshack.us/img376/3664/74296309.jpg https://img376.imageshack.us/img376/1149/30240851.jpg https://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5743/15412782.jpg https://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1644/50275454.jpg https://img376.imageshack.us/img376/548/47460523.jpg https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/112/99641055.jpg I had a bunch of maintenance work done to it, because alot of parts were still on the car from the factory ! - replaced timing belt + water pump - drained engine block and radiator, added new Honda type 2 Coolant - new thermostat - new alternator belt - new fuel filter - flushed old engine oil using Amsoil engine flush - Changed engine oil and filter used Amsoil 10w40 - changed original distributor cap and rotor - 4 new Honda spark plugs - replaced original spark plug wires with new NGK Blue wires - replaced original air filter - did emission smog test and passed with flying colors. - car didnt need anything for safety certification. Heres some recent pics: https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0075_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0062_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0074_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0058_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0059_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0050_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0055_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0053_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0042_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0048_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0047_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0046_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0044_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0049_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0045_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0035_large.jpg The engine bay was really the only thing that needed attention ! It had a buildup of 19 year old dirt and rustproofing, and a few nuts and bolts needed replacing as well due to corrosian! Well I spent 4+ days cleaning the crap out of the engine bay and engine itself ! Believe it or not, I basically used 2 cans of WD40, along with a paintbrush and a bunch of microfiber towels. Here's what the engine bay looked like before I got to it. :unamused: https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0028_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0030_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0029_large.jpg [img]https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_images/3/3554/4561/33884780026_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0027_large.jpg Lastly I bought some rare center console pockets. The dealer said only 2 left in Canada so I bought both. :) I also bought the last available rear center garnish. Some pics. https://www.cardomain.com/ride/3388478/3 Anyways, hope you enjoyed the pics. cheers |
Schweet!
Welcome aboard, Mr First Post! |
Un-Freikin' believable. A 91 with only 60K in that condition?!? That is an awesome find.
|
The mystical unmolested 90s Civic Si.
Great find! |
why did they buy it and sit on it?
did you get a descent deal on it? |

It sat in those 2 years. The first owner didnt use it much.. from 1991-2007. He mainly only used to for long trips and the cottage. I think I paid what it's worth... Car is being picked up from the mechanics shop friday. I had a bunch of maintenance work done to it. Everything was original, from the fuel filter, to the timing belt and water pump ! - replaced timing belt + water pump - drained engine block and radiator, added new Honda type 2 Coolant - new thermostat - new alternator belt - new fuel filter - flushed old engine oil using Amsoil engine flush - Changed engine oil and filter used Amsoil 10w40 - changed original distributor cap and rotor (did myself) - 4 new spark plugs (did myself) - replaced original spark plug wires with new NGK Blue wires (did myself) - replaced original air filter (did myself) - did emission smog test and passed with flying colors. - car didnt need anything for safety certification. :) |
Wow. Nice find!
|
that's awesome man.
buddy of mine just picked up an '89 with 150k on it. no where near as clean but same style. he paid $1700 for his but all the maintenance stuff has been done. he is now looking for a tach for it and maybe a vacuum gauge. *edit* his is also not an si not sure what it is but it has the D15B2 motor in it. he is hoping for 45ish out of it. |
Heres a couple interior shots.
Cleaned it up a bit and added a Quaife shift knob and lower console. :) https://img32.imageshack.us/img32/543/49330194.jpg https://img4.imageshack.us/img4/112/99641055.jpg |
thanks
|
Polish and wax? It's already more clean and shiny than my 2008 car...
|
and that car is an 18 years old???
that is a beautiful car. should last a long time |
|
I think we have been flim-flammed
|
LoL..
yes Im on numerous forums.. :p |
Damn that's clean!! I am impressed, nice find, especially being an Si!
|
That has to be the cleanest Si hatchback I've ever seen! I got a 90 Si myself but its been through hell and back. With a sohc ZC its getting 36 mpg with only the tires at 40 psi. Yours will probably get better!
|
The gearing is a bit short for the best economy, but damn, I love that car. White hatches make me drool.
ninja edit. |
I thought Hondas, and especially the Civic Si, come with gearing that's far too short for fuel economy.
I'm not even sure I've ever heard of a vehicle that comes from the factory with gearing too tall for fuel economy. |
Well I'm comparing the gas mileage between this stock civic and my crx.
So far the civic is getting unbelievable gas mileage, 1/2 highway, 1/2 city driving. 312kms @ half a tank. :D My Crx would normally get around 220kms half a tank city driving, and around 310kms highway driving, although my crx has a K&N Filter, headers, exhaust and 268,000 kms.. Gas tank capacity is 44 litres, I usually fill up @ empty 38 litres... https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...51aa79c83d.jpg Btw, all I need is an HF 5th gear... :) |
Well I finished my engine bay detail.. took about 4 days total.
I used WD-40 and a paintbrush and 4 microfiber towels. Works amazing on 20 year old buildup of dirt and rustproofing. No joke. =) Car had been sitting for 10+ years.. Buildup of rustproofing and dust on it takes its toll. Car has 105,000 kms (60,000 miles) https://i38.tinypic.com/2bpbah.jpg https://i33.tinypic.com/2jacnex.jpg https://i35.tinypic.com/k6cd0.jpg BEFORE: https://i34.tinypic.com/2ihma93.jpg https://i33.tinypic.com/2bruqt.jpg https://i35.tinypic.com/2z86f4j.jpg https://i34.tinypic.com/241kqvd.jpg https://i35.tinypic.com/k2gy02.jpg AFTER https://i36.tinypic.com/ohmtnc.jpg https://i34.tinypic.com/2ugpcsz.jpg https://i38.tinypic.com/mmwjl.jpg New hood insulator. AFAIK, 89-91 CIVIC Si hatches did not some ith one in Canada. https://i35.tinypic.com/4kznf5.jpg https://i38.tinypic.com/2h3defb.jpg New powdercoated valve cover. 10% Gloss texture black. Holds up much better than OEM wrinkle flat black enamel. https://i35.tinypic.com/23vnxg3.jpg https://i38.tinypic.com/33m5q1x.jpg Sorry for the dark garage pics. LOL |
awesome detail! it looks like it came right off the showroom floor. thanks for the tip.
|
What F...are you for real. It looks like you steam clean it. Man I need to do that to my VX too. So WD-40 and just brush it for 4 days right LOL.
|
|
I would like to know more about this WD40 + paint brush stuff.
I've done google searches and read lots of "detail tips" on other forums specifically looking for people who use WD40 and a paint brush and have found zero results. EDIT: Truth is, I now know every car forum you're on though... because all the results were your threads. /EDIT I'm very anal about how clean I keep all my engines and to date the best I've found is any assortment of brake cleaners, engine degreasers, and just plain dawn dish soap with a rag. I can NEVER get the cast intake manifolds or valve covers to release the grime beneathe the texture like you've done to your intake manifold. Be completely honest with us, there was no pressure washer/steam cleaner involved in this? I'm perplexed.... and jealous. I spent the better part of 2 days scrubbing the engine/bay of my turbo Miata while I was finishing up the hardware install and it looks about 1/3 as good as your Civic. Not to mention I probably absorbed into my skin enough chemicals to cause cancer at least 10 years sooner than the WD40 method would've. |
Well, now that I read through your Honda-Tech forum writeup I understand it a big more. There was a lot of new parts that went into it as well, I knew the motor mount, but was hoping the radiator and hardware was all wd-40 and maybe some time on a buffer (hardware).
Now I want to go home and really get into the Camaro since it's been the most neglected over the past 2 years I have only had the hood up to disconnect/connect the battery for jogs around the block occasionally. Great job though, Robb! |
^^ Thanks.. good luck with your cleaning :D
|
Okay, not to call you a liar but I just tried to clean an intake manifold for about 30 minutes in one spot (with a paint brush and WD40) and it never came close to the luster of yours.
Yes, a lot of the grime came out, more so than w/ a rag and solvents... but somethings not adding up! |

My manifold was already clean.. just a lil dusty. The real dirt was around the shock towers and around the engine bay. PS: Why would I lie about this ? I have nothing to gain in doing so.... |
Something you didn't mention...yer brake fluid. Now you just have to replace the brake fluid...cause after all them years...that fluid is gonna be loaded with water. ;)

I want to put pics up for you... haha
Maybe if I can remember tonight I'll snap some. Then I'll show my Saturn's engine as well, which I detailed about 2 weeks ago with a friend who has all kinds of chemicals since he has a mobile detailing company. |
You are making me miss my white '91 hatch. Wish I could find a clean rust free one. Probably not going to happen here in Indy with all the salt they throw down though.
Gonna wait until it is warm to start detailing my engine bay... lol |
My Saturn... there are a few dirty spots from recent snow/rain driving. Also, a few scuffs here and there, not bad though. :)
https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0016_large.jpg https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0018_large.jpg My Miata... I was trying to get the intake manifold back to showroom clean. It's clean, just not shiney like yours. https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0014_large.jpg Blurry pic... sorry. https://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...0015_large.jpg |
One of my Camaro just for the heck of it.

My VX (with 225,000 miles)
https://www.gassavers.org/garage_imag...pv0gky0zgp.jpg Not nearly as nice as some, but not bad for the age and mileage. |
Looks good to me man! I love clean engines. :)
