Shifter button on HHR auto stuck
Got a minor problem that's causing big trouble. While putting the transmission in park last night, the lock button went down a little farther than normal and didn't return. Now it shifts freely between gears, but is drivable. At this point it is just a bother. Just no neutral shifting until fixed to avoid hitting reverse while moving forward.
So I put in park and set the parking brake. Then I try to remove the key, and I can't. The park must not be engaging, and thus the key lock is set. Tried to turn off all the accessories and locked up with the fob. Something remained on, and battery was dead this morning. I know what is broke, the shifter button, but not exactly how to fix it. |
That happened on my grandmother's Skyhawk eons ago. I think grandpa was able to pop it back out by sticking a small screwdriver in there.

I'll try that, and I found instructions on removing the knob. Much simpler than I feared. Hopefully, I can get it fixed or jury rigged. Dealer quoted me $127 for a new knob.

WOW you are not alone on the HHR shifter and Key lock problem - google it and see if there is anything that can help you - I see a bunch of photos of the shifter taken apart . . . https://www.answerbag.com/q_view/416947

Well that sucks. It sounds like the problem part is down in the console, not in the handle.

check to see if it's been recalled for this issue. the dealer wouldn't likely freely give that info, especially for a chance to make $$$.
|
hit it with a hammer and pry at it with a screwdriver.

Without being familiar with the vehicle, I'd expect the key lock 'feature' to be controlled by a fuse, and therefore could be disabled so you can get the key out.

yea i dont know about modern cars but all the ones ive messed with is theres a mechanical linkage that wont let you take out the key if its not in park. (doesnt actually turn the key to the fully off position)
im suprised it let you lock it with the key in the ign. some cars wont so you dont leave your keys in the car. |
06 chevy... it's going to be all computer modules and solenoids. just pulling a fuse probably won't work.
