Is this Honda CRX HF worth $4,000?

Hello there, first post. I've posted on other forums about this but basically theres a HF for sale with roughly 185k miles. I know I can find a lot cheaper CRX's out there but, they tend to have problems, or tend to be modified to the point where it would costs money to actually make it run right. This car is all stock and it seems that if I were to buy it, there'd be little to worry about(aside from the regular maintenance) I guess I'm just cautious since for a couple more thousand dollars I can get a newer car, like a RSX or a civic, but then again the HF's do get pretty good gas milage. Is it worth the 4 thousand? Or should I just wait till another one pops up? I hear HF models are pretty rare. ..

Is fuel economy your highest concern?

The CRX is not so great in crashes. A newer RSX or Civic is likely to be much safer, and it may be easier to find parts for a more common car.

Yeah thats what I was thinking but I would assume maintenance on a CRX would be a lot cheaper, plus it would also be cheaper insurance. I'm still trying to decide. urgh.

The insurance cost would defintiely make a big difference. It's easy to find out, just check with your insurer. I know Progressive and Geico can both quote online, 24/7, immediate results, without having to talk to a customer service representative.

According to https://www.rockauto.com/repairindex a 1994 Civic DX has slightly cheaper parts than a 1989 CRX DX.
Consider also that an older vehicle is likely to need more repairs, plus the CRX is probably carbureted which may mean more adjustments needed and also you have to find a mechanic who still knows carburetors well (not just one who says he does)...

I'd say it depends on your priorities. I personally don't think a near 200K, 23 yr old car is worth anywhere near $4000. For the same amount of money, you can have your pick of similar econoboxes with 1/2 the mileage, and 1/3 the age. I just helped a friend buy a 2001 Chevy Cavalier with 60k miles for $2200. I doubt you'll ever save enough in gasoline to make up for the premium price you're paying for the HF over any similar '87 subcompact.

The CRX is fuel injected, NOT carbureted and there is a huge Honda forum that can help you with any problems that you may encounter with these cars. The guy is asking $4000 but that's usually a starting point, you may be able to haggle him down like $500 or something. If that car is really in that great of condition and you'd like to have it, I'd say go ahead and get it. There are cheaper alternatives but if you like the sporty double wishbone suspension, light weight and getting semi-close to Insight mileage, it really isn't all that bad. With that said, you can pickup a Civic VX which has very very similar mileage for a bit less and it'll have seating for 5.

Well I was gonna back out on this deal because I just found out the car doesn't have AC buuut.. theres some "Do it yourself" threads on how to add AC so I think I'm gonna buy it after all. I"m emailing the owner, I'm hoping he can hold onto the car until I come back to the states..

Pros: very nice........ keep in mind 185k is nothing for an old HOnda like that. & you'll be able to get excellent mileage (if you fill up your tires & modify your driving habits).:) :thumbup:
