Cycling in 2010

Today is the first day that temperature rose above freezing, got my first outdoor ride for this year, 21.6 mi. about 2200 ft. vertical elevation change.

Lug_Nut 03-10-2010 03:23 PM

This is as good as any, I suppose.....
How about making this thread the 2010 pedaling distance tally thread?

For me: After a truly terrible winter (two bouts of flu, broken rib, numerous medical tests related to sleep apnea, low iron, low platelet count, as well as weather issues with no extended period of cleared streets) I have finally ridden again for the first time since late October. I have a lot of catching up to do, but 4+ months out of the saddle have left my tushy and quads in need of some toughening and re-conditioning before I can really hammer again.
Let the pain begin!

Mike T 03-18-2010 11:51 AM

I have to re-chain my bike and get on it soon. I hope to begin riding in 2 weeks.

theholycow 03-18-2010 12:07 PM

I'm thinking that I might do some recreational riding this year. I need the exercise.

I think that every year as spring rolls around, but maybe this year I'll actually do it.

Sounds like me. My bike is still hanging in the garage...with the 1984 tires still on it (amazingly, they still hold air), but with much of the Chinese gum rubber flaking away.

I have a housemate who keeps trying to foist his old bicycle off on me...maybe I'll give in and take it...it at least has new tires...

theholycow 03-18-2010 05:02 PM

$6 WalMart tires are acceptable, if necessary.

Jay2TheRescue 03-18-2010 06:24 PM

LOL, my bike still has the 1984 tires on it as well. Its a Huffy "Team America" (1984 Olympics) 10 speed Its a wonderful metallic blue with stars all over it.

GasSavers_JoeBob 03-18-2010 09:44 PM

I wonder if your Huffy was still made in Azusa, CA (not far from where I lived at the time)...seems about that time was when they closed their factory down and turned it into a Costco...

Mine is a Huffy 10 speed also...much older model, I bought it well used in 1978 or '79. Rode it a fair amount during the '79 embargo...

Jay2TheRescue 03-19-2010 03:05 AM

I'll have to check & see next time I'm at my parent's house. Right now its hanging upside down from the ceiling in the basement.

Aloha from Haleakala, Maui..

Last month I climbed up to 10,023+ ft. from sea level in 38 miles.

Even climbed some more to "Science City" after the summit:

Wow. Haleakala was quite a drive, biking it is a HUGE deal!

You live on Maui? Know of any IT job openings?

I wish I live in Maui, I should of/could have stayed there and survived doing odd jobs... but my wife wouldn't let me..

Lug_Nut 04-06-2010 04:48 PM

"winter '10" miles (Jan 1 to date): 101.1

Plus a reminder to add in 20 miles for the next report. Ya see..... I decided to put up the mountain bike and start taking the DeRosa road bike, but I had forgotten just how bad the headset was on it.
So I took the Vitus, but that one doesn't have a computer mount and pulse detector, thus the undocumented 20 mile commute. Geez! I had also forgotten how nice light sew-up tires on light wheel sets can be!
I rebuilt the headset in the DeRosa by pulling out the caged bearings and stuffing it with loose bearings. That'll get me another year's use out of this head set.....
Hey, inch threaded headsets are getting to be as scarce as 5 speed chains and down tube shift levers...

Mike T 04-13-2010 04:15 PM

Nice ride, that! Bigger than an Alpine climb!

I got mine out yesterday and began my annual commuting. Goal: >2500 km and -20 lbs.

Mike T 05-05-2010 11:48 AM

Sixth ride today. Cold in the AM (like 32 degrees F) but should be warmer (50?) on the ride home. Weather up here has sucked a lot.

Mike T 05-12-2010 11:39 AM

8th ride and it's getting warmer....plus I'm getting faster. A bit over 400 km is on the bike so far.

Mike T 05-21-2010 11:27 AM

The ride on Monday was nice: warm, slight tailwind and an average speed of 29 km/h. Today it's Friday, cold and raining but I rode anyway. 5 minutes longer into work because conditions were so nasty, still the average speed was about 26.5 km/h.

I hope next week has better riding weather.

Mike T 06-09-2010 11:41 AM

The weather has sucked a$$ the last month or two but I have still managed to get twelve rides in. Yesterday's was the fastest, at an average speed of 30.5 km/h. I still weigh about 20 lbs too much!

Mike T 06-29-2010 11:54 AM

over 1000 km so far, averaging about 30 km/h...

Nrggeek 07-14-2010 08:56 AM

I've probably done about 1000 km as well this year. Not sure exactly since I don't have a bike computer. Just did a 40 mile ride last night, averaging 18 mph (29 km/h). I love my recumbent bike (Bacchetta Giro 20). It is SO comfortable and makes long rides a joy, but it takes more effort to keep the speed up, especially over hills, since the bike weighs 35 lbs (16 kg)!

~Bill

Mike T 07-15-2010 11:43 AM

That's impressive!

I am at 1400 km now and if the weather holds into October I should be able to hit 3000 km for the year.

Still averaving 30 km/h on the rides into work. I seem to be stuck there but when this next 10 lbs of fat dissolves I should be able to hit the hills harder.

Mike T 07-30-2010 11:20 AM

Nearly cracked 32 km/h (20 MPH) average today. Total km is about 1650 thus far.

Mike T 08-04-2010 06:47 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

Well I did average exactly 21 MPH today on the ride in to work, 46 minutes flat, 25.88 km.

Re: Cycling in 2010

Put together a road bike for my wife last week, she's verticaly challenged.

https://velospace.org/files/wpp111.JPG

35cm frame, 650c wheels, 145mm crankset, 34cm handlebar.. altogether.. one tiny bicycle. She wants to do a century in October.

Over the weekend we went out for 18 mile ride, took 1 1/2 hour with food stop and multiple breaks.. I think I will do the same century with her on my recumbent.

Re: Cycling in 2010

Nice!

I managed a couple more decent rides, 20 and 20.5 MPH. Total km to date this year is 1885. Should be nearly 2000 km before August 21 when we go away for a two week holiday....

Mike T 08-19-2010 11:35 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

Update: as of Friday this week I will have 2010 km on the bike this year. About 15 lbs. have been dropped so far. The target is another 1000 km and 10 lbs. Average speeds are consistently over 30 km/h now, 31.2 yesterday for example.

Lug_Nut 10-01-2010 07:20 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

431.34?
Four hundred thirty one point three four miles?
That's all that shows on the cyclo-computer! I've only commuted 21 days (at 10.2 miles one way) this year?
Something's up.....

Lug_Nut 10-01-2010 07:32 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

No, that's right. I went back into the prior pedal distance threads and worked forward from a post in which I had the odometer total.
Cumulative odometer: 4518.3
2010 year to date: 431.34

Mike T 10-14-2010 12:04 PM

Re: Cycling in 2010

The late season has not been kind. Distance since the last post I made is only 270 km more, and weight is maybe 1 lb lower. Meh. I hope to get maybe 3 or 4 more rides in before the monsoons hit.

Re: Cycling in 2010

Wife and I rode the Covered Bridge Ride yesterday, likely the last day for this year that temp. still got up near 70's.

Pic of wife and co-worker, I was just taking the pic.

Mike T 10-20-2010 11:55 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

Rode today in 40 degree (F) weather, one of the last rides, my km total is approaching 2340. I'd like to get two or three more rides in.

I am planning on getting a new Colnago Master X-lite next year. That would be my first new bike in 33 years.

cat0020 11-25-2010 05:52 AM

Re: Cycling in 2010

Nice!

My season ended at 2330 km. Next year, new bike and a Gran Fondo are on the cards.

Mike T 12-29-2010 11:40 PM

Re: Cycling in 2010

Well I skipped the Colnago Master, it would have cost over 8 Grand with the basic Record group....

On December 29th I bought my new bike, the first one since 1978. It is a 2010 model Cerv?lo RS, 58 cm frame, Ultegra equipment throughout, except for the wheels which are MAVIC Ksyrium SL, with my favourite tires, Michelin Krylion Carbon. I am looking forward to riding it, other than the short test ride I made today....

Re: Cycling in 2010

Where's the picture of new bike?

Went out for my last ride this year, 12 rolling miles in 40 degree F temp.
Closing out this year with 1661.4 miles, starting tomorrow with another 12 miles for year 2011.

Here you go:

The photo was taken Saturday, after a 27 km ride.

Lug_Nut 01-02-2011 03:40 PM

Re: Cycling in 2010

2010 total: 587.74 miles  That's my own fault.
I've also (finally) completed another bike for myself: a 57 cm Vitus 979. This one allowed me to use all that French threaded Super Record stuff I've been holding onto. I found my other Flickstand to use:) , but have lost the blue 'Cobalto' stones from the brakes:(
More precipitation forecast for tonight, so more snow and slush on the roads in the morning. More driving miles (excuses, excuses).

Looks to me you need a bigger bike/frame.

It was professionally F.I.S.T fitted, and the bike is 3 inches lower than where I am standing (driveway drain).

As a bike rider/racer/mechanic for over 20 years, I never trust those "professional bike fitting", especially those that put you on a stationary type trainer.
Optimal riding position needs to be determined on rides, on climbs, downhills, sprinting for the next pole, flat-out in a paceline at 25 mph and most important at sustained cadence of +120 rpm.
