Another thing I was thinking about was converting to an electric power steering, however I think that is mutually exclusive of the alternator removal (because the electric power steering can draw some really big amperage).

The other problem is that fuel injection depends on a certain voltage to function as the computer is anticipating. As we know, most cars run about 14 volts when the engine is running, but the best you'd hope for is about 12.5 when the alternator isn't present. At a lower voltage, the injectors don't open as quickly, which throws things off a bit (especially at very low pulsewidths). So many systems will try to compensate (which usually means over-compensating) by adding to the pulsewidth when the voltage drops.

Maybe we should invent a way to run the alternator by an electric motor. :)

I have a better idea, run the alternator with magnets, cms magnetics can help you to start, ive been wanting to create a perpetual charger this way for a while but im too busy magnets4sale.com is their site

here's what im talking about

MAGNETIC ENGINES ARE FOR REAL!! SEARCH IT ON YOU TUBE...

MY FRIEND HAS SOME OF THESE MAGNETS FOR A GUITAR PICKUP HE WAS BUILDING WHICH GOT ME STARTED ON THE IDEA, ALSO BE PLAYING AROUND WITH CHARGING CAR BATTERIES FROM SOLAR IN THE LAST YEAR... HAVEN'T GOTTEN TO FAR, BUT

ON A SIDE NOTE:
MY INGENIOUS EX MARINE NEIGHBOR POWERS HIS HOUSE OF OFF BATTERIES HE SWITCHES IN AND OUT OF HIS TRUCK, YOU CAN GET AN INVERTOR, PLUG IT ONTO THE BATTERY AND THEN TURN OFF A FUSE IN YOUR HOUSE, PLUG THE INVERTER, VIA RIGGED SAME END PLUG MEANING, TWO, TWO PRONG PLUGS ON EACH END AND GO RIGHT INTO YOUR HOUSE AND THAT WILL POWER THE ENTIRE CIRCUIT. NOW THATS STRETCHING YOUR FUEL DOLLAR HAHA..

So your neighbor is using his truck as a generator to power his house? Has he compared the cost of running his truck vs. the cost of grid power? How about the cost of an inverter large enough to power everything? They're quite expensive...I'd love to get one for my dad so he could run power tools on jobsites but I can't afford that.

Had a friend a few years ago who ran his house off a generator...but that was because he didn't pay his electric bill for a long time, and the re-connect fee was a LOT more expensive than buying and running a generator. Since the bill had been in his name, after he was killed in a car wreck, his wife was able to get the power turned back on.

using a car to power batteries is probably more money than the power it self. it cost money to run that alt even if your driving. not to mention the weight.

I wish I had my scanner working...I have an old (1935) issue of QST magazine...published by the American Radio Relay League, a major amateur radio association. Every year they hold an event called Field Day, where hams take radio equipment out for a day and evening camping, setting up in a park, or somewhere away from home and away from commercial power.

Well, the issue I am thinking of had an article on the very first Field Day in 1935. Among the various photographs taken at different field day setups, there was one showing the generating system some guys were using. It consisted of a car, jacked up (tire changing jack, no jack stands evident), rim w/no tire on left rear, belt running from rim to a dynamo which provided power for their radio equipment. Not the most efficient system, but a few gallons of gasoline was a lot cheaper than the cost of a generator. This was the depression, money wasn't available for extravagances such as generators, but just about everybody had a car, and the dynamo was probably cheap.

no the plug trick works no sarcasm and the magnetic engine works too.

do not deny it till you try it
