So your neighbor is using his truck as a generator to power his house? Has he compared the cost of running his truck vs. the cost of grid power? How about the cost of an inverter large enough to power everything? They're quite expensive...I'd love to get one for my dad so he could run power tools on jobsites but I can't afford that.

Had a friend a few years ago who ran his house off a generator...but that was because he didn't pay his electric bill for a long time, and the re-connect fee was a LOT more expensive than buying and running a generator. Since the bill had been in his name, after he was killed in a car wreck, his wife was able to get the power turned back on.

using a car to power batteries is probably more money than the power it self. it cost money to run that alt even if your driving. not to mention the weight.

I wish I had my scanner working...I have an old (1935) issue of QST magazine...published by the American Radio Relay League, a major amateur radio association. Every year they hold an event called Field Day, where hams take radio equipment out for a day and evening camping, setting up in a park, or somewhere away from home and away from commercial power.

Well, the issue I am thinking of had an article on the very first Field Day in 1935. Among the various photographs taken at different field day setups, there was one showing the generating system some guys were using. It consisted of a car, jacked up (tire changing jack, no jack stands evident), rim w/no tire on left rear, belt running from rim to a dynamo which provided power for their radio equipment. Not the most efficient system, but a few gallons of gasoline was a lot cheaper than the cost of a generator. This was the depression, money wasn't available for extravagances such as generators, but just about everybody had a car, and the dynamo was probably cheap.
