Happy Birthday to ME!
https://www.bikerbill.com/1229.html Now, what shall I name it when I enter it in the garage? https://www.gassavers.org/attachment....4&d=1277346419 https://www.gassavers.org/attachment....6&d=1277346553 |
happy b-day. you gotta name it...HARLEY of course!
|
I was looking for something more original than that.
Its an 06 Dyna Super Glide. |
Boss Hawg!
|
Name it: BLBLBLBLBLBLBLBBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBWWWWWAAAAAAA AA
|
Nice bike!
I'd paint the bottom end and transmission black as my first mod. |
I don't think I'll be doing any painting the tranny unless it starts looking bad, and I can't get it polished to my satisfaction.
|
LOL @ HC. That's exactly what it sounds like...
@ Project 84: Planned mods in the immediate future are engine guard bars, conversion of taillight & turn signals to LED, and installation of a wireless LED 3rd brake light on the back of my helmet. Longer term mods include saddlebags, luggage rack, driving lights, RFID starter interlock, and detachable windshield. |
"Big Red"
"Man Bike" "Two wheeled Terror" "Tiny Tim" or "Cricket" (if you are into sarcasm) "Easy Rider" |

Thumper!

"Thumpers" are big singles (Buell Blast, BMW 650 and such)
Double Thumper? Phallus?* * I worked in a bicycle shop. I had a Puch 2 speed moped, the owner had an Electra-Glide . "You wouldn't know what it's like to have so much power!" I replied with: "Yes I do know. That's why I need the clearance a step-through frame provides!" |

Well, that's what happens when you buy a used bike. The previous owner installed a "Screaming Eagle" exhaust system on it. I would like the bike a little quieter, but I'm going to focus my mods on safety items first, such as LED turn signals, extra loud horn, engine guard bars, etc.

I think my best (cheap) option is to run into someone with a similar super glide at a rally who really likes the sound of my bike, and offer to trade pipes. I really like the looks of the pipes on it now though. For some of the Screaming Eagle pipes you can change out the baffles. I may look into that.
|
Nice Harley. Congrats.
You should just name it "Bertha" and ride the hell out of her. |
HC: stock Hardleys are reasonably quiet... for about the first 10 minutes of ownership. Then the pipes come off.
There must be a mountain of Hardley, pickup, and ricer stock mufflers somewhere the size of Manhattan. |
Yeah, I would like to make it quieter, but I just haven't had the time to look at it closely. Some mufflers you can switch out the baffles inside to change the sound. If I can do that with these pipes it won't cost much.

Boomer?
Jim And get yourself some good hot weather gear, I just got a pair of Motoboss Airspeed4 mesh armoured pants from Cyclegear in Orlando. Nice fit and they flow! |
Sorry, I'm not up on all of the lingo yet... Just got my motorcycle liscence a week ago. Are you asking if its loud? If so the answer is definately yes.
I bought a pair of Tourmaster Air Venture pants. They're mesh pants with body armor in the knees and hips. They have 2 removable linings. windproof/waterproof, and thermal. https://www.helmetcity.com/page/HC/PR...ventureairpant https://www.helmetcity.com/mm5/graphi...-4Front_lg.jpg |
I was suggesting a name!
Jim |
Aaaah! That makes sense now...

I got to ride for the first time today... The store opens an hour later (8am) on Sat, and there is very little traffic this early on a weekend. I got up at my regular time, as if I was driving to work at 6:45, but instead I rode my bike to an empty shopping plaza 1/2 mile away to get acquainted with the clutch, brake, and throttle response. After lapping the parking lot for 20 minutes I ventured out on some more neighborhood streets (25 MPH with 4 way stop signs), then went out onto Sterling Blvd (35 MPH, 4 lanes with grass median strip, and traffic lights every 1/4 mile.) I rode up and down that road a few times, then decided that I was going to be late to work, so I ventured out on Rt 7 for 2 blocks, got up to 50 MPH, then turned into the parking lot @ work. I ended up there 20 minutes early, so I had plenty of time to change into my work clothes, and apply fresh hair gel... :) I LOVED IT!

Where I work there are several Harley riders. At work, we are very emphatic about using PPE, and our hearing is tested annually. (My hearing seems to have diminished slightly in the female voice range...) Yet, they have probably the loudest pipes available (straight pipe?) on their bikes. I have to wonder, if they do much riding, how much those pipes might skew their hearing tests? (I wonder this because when I was riding, I could easily put 20k miles a year on a bike...especially when gas was expensive or you had to stand in line to purchase it...) As for a name...I'm kinda partial to "The Bike", or "The Harley". Or, it could be "The Little Red Hooptie". Or, there was the name that old Indian riders gave them, and was often used during the dark, dismal days when Harley was owned by AMF: "Hardly Ableson". Have fun! |
I was at a flea market today, and picked up a set of new leather saddle bags for $60.

Anyway, the loudest thing about our bikes is the wind. I usually use earplugs for longer trips on open road. We just bought a new helmet (a Lazer Dayton) for my girlfriend though, and she says it's much quieter inside than with the previous one (an AGV, I don't remember the model...). I probably should get a replacement too... |
I noticed, now that I'm better about finessing the throttle, that I can keep it relatively quiet unless I want it to be loud. I really don't want to be loud though. If I shift up through the gears quickly it is relatively quiet. I can be in 6th gear without lugging if I'm going at least 35 MPH. From where I sit its not that loud, but then again I really haven't had it up to highway speeds yet either. I just don't like the idea of ear plugs.
|
Just had my first fillup. The low fuel light came on at 1/4 tank, so I filled up. My mileage on my first full tank is 40.29 MPG, and that is including us getting stuck in stop & go traffic the day it was picked up, and me playing in an empty parking lot for an hour getting used to the clutch, brake, and throttle response. I am very optimistic that I can do much better in my daily usage because I won't be playing in parking lots anymore.

Helmet mounted brake light just arrived in the big, brown truck!

Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
One of the better looking Hayley that I've seen recently.
Chrome doesn't do a whole lot for me. https://terrytori.smugmug.com/Motorcy...5_5G9Vb-XL.jpg https://terrytori.smugmug.com/Motorcy...8_roXaY-XL.jpg |
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
That is a nice looking Sportster.
|
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
De-chroming definitely changes the whole character of the bike and makes it a much more palatable sight for me.
|
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
I agree with the matte black finish on a Sportster completely. When you chrome them out, and try to make them look like a mini cruiser they just don't look right. Let it be what it is, a classically styled sport bike. Less is more in this case.

Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
People put pipes on Harleys because of the Harley sound. The sound metrics attempt to imitate with big bores and pipes, but can't quite copy the timing setup, which is patented.
O.P. - since you're a newbie rider and obviously trying to do things right, I suggest you spend $30-40 for the Ride Like A Pro video, buy some sport/soccer cones (about .50 each) and go practice the routine in a parking lot until you can do the police level setup in the last half of the video. You will not only never drop your bike in a slow speed maneuver, but you will then be in the top 2% of all riders out there - and other bikers will look like complete goofs to you with your newfound skills. You will also know what you're doing in the twisties, and enjoy the sport/lifestyle of biking a WHOLE lot more! Watching the video does nothing though. The neural learning comes from hitting the cone work, learning to automatically apply "head and eyes", "feet up", "friction zone", and the 12 mph steering crossover into countersteering. Believe me, everyone should take this course, but pride keeps them from doing so, thinking they know how to ride. 30 years of riding is one year of riding done 30 times. Five sessions in the cones is worth your life. Not to mention you can do things none of your buds can! https://www.fuelly.com/attachments/fo...7f55b86c45.jpg |
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
I've done a lot of that already, and I've taken the MSF beginner course. As far as cones go, the local community college has a motorcycle driving range marked off on pavement. I have two 4" cones, I don't need more because the range is painted. Its 3 miles from home, so I can practice just about any time they're not running a motorcycle class.
As soon as the college starts up cycle classes again in the spring I want to take the experienced rider course. |
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
Here's a good name for that bike...
"Big V" |
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
Harleys are okay..but here's my pride and joy.

Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
That's a nice bike. I named mine "Boomer" though.
|
Re: I bought the Harley today!!!
Thanks! It is an '09 Bonneville T-100, so fuel injected. Tired of messing with carbs anymore.
"Boomer" is a cool name, and very appropriate I'm sure. Used to have a Sporty with slash cut exhausts - it would set off car alarms in a parking lot! |
