Graphite dust in transmission oil?

HI, everyone. I was just thinkin about this. Would it do any harm to add graphite dust to the tranny oil?

why would you do this?

I believe that was a very old trick that used car dealers employed a long time ago to hide shifting and slipping problems in automatic transmissions. It works in the short term, but long term I don't think its good. Long term I think it will just clog up the transmission filter.

That sounds about right J2TR.

I thought the sawdust goes in the engine...

GasSavers_Erik 07-06-2010 12:46 PM

I thought the sawdust was to quiet a noisy/worn rear differential.

I've heard of using sawdust in the transmission as well, apparently it cures all. Why don't we put it in our fuel tanks and see if our mileage goes up?

just kidding...

Heheh. I heard of using brownies in the rear diff. No lie.
I would like to decrease the friction in my manual transmission. I don't have any problems, and am going to rebuild it soon, so I'm thinking about possible experiments in the mean time.

You're just going to make your life more difficult when it comes time to rebuilding it... I wouldn't bother with any "trickery" at all.
