Need A Motor

I need to price a replacement engine.
Any links to places are appreciated.

When I got Clyde The Ride, the engine consumed over four quarts of oil in 5,000 miles. Finally, the consumption is down to one or two quarts; better, but still borderline unacceptable. Now, the left head gasket sprung a leak, all over the drivers side of everything and my mechanic says that, because of all the previous trouble the best thing is to replace the rings, re-hone the cylinders, do a valve job and make sure everything is right and....it'll be expensive and time consuming. So, a used engine becomes an option.

Dang! I thought a truck with 10,000 miles on it that was show-room clean was too good to be true.

i'm sure you could search junkyards nation wide and get a decent warranty, some now even cover labor to reinstall a replacement should your used engine be defective.

but, since you drive so much and assuming you've built some wealth, jasper is your best(and most expensive) choice w/ a 100k warranty...https://www.jasperengines.com/index.php

car-part.com will help you find a junkyard motor (most have a 30 day warranty)

Just curious- How did you reduce the oil consumption from 4 quarts per 5K down to 1-2 quarts per 5K? Thicker oil?

Nice resolution!

Jasper doesn't have an engine. Of course I didn't check racing engines.....
Yes, I did. Nope.

Re: Need A Motor

Erik, I ran non-detergent oil for about 10,000 miles, on the theory the rings didn't properly set. I also was crazy enough to run Amsoil Engine and Transmission Cleaner for 45 minutes beyond the 15 minuted recommended cleaning time. Now that is using a low viscosity oil!
Theory being that maybe an oil ring was clogged.

First the engine has to come out anyway so if you can take it off the road for a while then do the following. Pull the engine and strip it while checking the suspected parts for damage and wear. It may not need a lot of work done to it and it could be just cooked rings from someone pushing it way too soon. Bottom line is that if the engine is good with only a few things to repair in it you can end up with a solid engine after spending some money instead of a crap shoot from a junkyard motor that probably sat for too long and has rusty bores that will wreck the rings when you start it back up anyway. Plus you run with the stock registered engine for the vehicle so no inspection or registration issues. I don't understand why it costs so much to rebuild when it really is a couple of days work with a fast mechanic that knows what he is doing.

This will explain why I have to consider another engine.

If the problem is an upside-down ring...no problem. But Dex has to give me the worst case scenario and asks what if the problem is the block?

Ok that's more info. Try this really quick check ... Pull the valve cover off and check / retorque the head that sprung the leak. If all is tight then it's not good but if it's loose then you have to think what happened or who worked on it last. Heads have to get pretty hot to warp and an oil leak on a head would be a cover gasket and maybe too much blowby pushing the oil out. Oil feeds to the head are usually deep in the center and don't leak outside the engine. Pull the head off and put a glass plate across it to check for warpage and a blown gasket will be easy to see if you take it off. A quart in 500 mile would be a lot of smoke or at least stink a lot so it's probably leaking.

Re: Need A Motor

I used to have to drop about a quart ever 3500 miles into the vx with 210,000 miles on it.
I had helicoild the threads in the top of the head, but one cracked before my work started. The previous owner had way overtorqued it. I through drilled it about 1" deeper and rethreaded with a smaller tap.
A longer bolt and no more losing that much oil!

Maybe now like 1 quart every 6k or more.
