VW Golf Ecomatic: Computer-controlled EOC in 1993

https://www.deylan.co.uk/golf/ecomatic/index.htm

Way back in 1993, VW had much less success with this idea than Honda had with the VX. The ecomatic has a normal manual transmission with a computer-operated clutch. When the driver lets off the go-pedal, the computer would declutch, wait a moment, then shut off the engine. When the driver steps on it again, the computer would start the engine and engage the clutch.

It's a mild hybrid, before any other that I've known...basically it does EOC, automatically.

Interesting stuff. Too bad the article never mentioned the actual fuel consumption...

I guess the engine never did DFCO then.
