Honda D-Series Engine Swap Question
 

I have a D15 Engine in my '95 Del Sol. I found a VTEC D16 out of a '95 Del Sol Si. This engine will come with the intake, header, ECU, and wiring harness. I would like to put the Si engine into my Del Sol, but mate it to the original transmission out of the S, since it has much taller gearing.

Looking at the parts diagrams for the 2 cars on bkhondaparts.com, it looks like the input shafts for the 2 transmissions have different part numbers.

Would the D16 engine match up to the D15-style transmission without any modifications? Would I use the D15 clutch and flywheel or the D16 clutch and flywheel?

Those with D-series swap experience, please advise.

Also, I just remembered that the Si 1.6L has power steering, whereas my S 1.5L does not. Is the fix as simple as removing the power steering pump from the Si 1.6L engine and installing a drive belt from an S 1.5L engine?

Its a direct bolt it. Every thing will interchange. But you will need to use the vtec computer and wire in vtec.

You may have to use the D15 clutch disc, if the input shaft PNs are different between the D15 and D16 transmissions, they may have a different spline count.

Is it easier to remove a D-series engine with the tranny attached, or is it best to remove the engine by itself?

I don't think you can just remove the engine, meaning leaving the transmission in the car. You need to pull the tranny input shaft out far enough to clear the clutch, and I don't think there's enough room in the engine bay to move the engine over that far towards the driver's side, plus even if it there was, I think it would be a serious pain to get them mated back up.

My driveway is sloped and I didn't want an engine hoist rolling down my driveway. When i pulled the engine out of my Integra, I pulled the tranny then removed the head and oil pan while the engine was still in the car. I have a transmission jack similar to this one:

I used it to lower the engine block, then muscle it (actually not, the engine block by itself is not that heavy) on the the garage floor in the engine bay and roll the jack out of the way. The front of the car is relatively high on jack stands, the rear on the rear tires. There was just enough room to scoot the engine block out from under the front of the car. The jack allowed me to hoist the engine block back up to get the engine mounts installed.

If you had a cherry picker engine hoist, it probably is easier to remove the engine and tranny together.
