Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
Hi guys. I just recently got 92 Vx and drove it back on the highway with 27psi.
Sumitomo htr 200 tires. Road noise was so excessive that it was louder then cranked up radio. Any suggestions on how to eliminate or reduce substantially road noise. In my case it's too excessive. I"m not exasperating. What would be good quite tires that also achieve great MPG. I'm assuming both don't fit well together. Also hand brake locked up brakes and now they stick to rotor. How do i free it up. |
Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
Also driving threw mountains up and down, when it snowed, rained some and was windy got 44mpg on highway. Kinda sucks. I had engine between 1600-1800 rmps with 60-65mpg speeds in 5th geat. Was hoping over 50mpg. Has new 0xygen sensor.

Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
part of your MPG being lower than you might have hoped could also be attributed to getting winter blend mixture. Summer blend is here in Arkansas, and I've already noticed a difference in my mpg.

Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
If your brakes were dragging slightly at the time, that would have made a huge difference in mpg. I can see how someone might not know that they were dragging. VXs will coast FOREVER due to 0 degrees toe and low driveline resistance. Free up the brakes, drive it a while, and jack it back up to make sure the wheels spin freely.
Also, check out the usual culprits. Cap, rotor, plugs, wires. Tire choice can make a big difference. I am not familiar with the tires on your car. |
Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
The elephant in the room is that the VX is = to excessive road noise.
The VX has no noise insulation to keep the weight down for better MPG. The better the LRR tires, the more PSI in those tires, the louder the noise level inside the VX. |
Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
Thanks guys but no insulation would contribute to road noise being louder then my cranked up stereo? The noise is extremely loud. I can't imagine it being that loud just cause of no insulation. My buddy that has VX is telling me his is quite so now i'm even more confused. I understand some road noise but i really think it's on extreme side and i'm a guy. If a girl would ride in it she would flip out.

Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
Without exaggeration i would think long term exposure to that noise in the car would mean some hearing loss. I wish i could measure it in dB. I'm kinda hoping it's the Sumimoto tires but i want to ask first before i go get set of $500 tires to fined out they didn't help. I'm looking at Michelin Energy Saver A/S.

A bad wheel bearing will make a roaring noise that gets louder as you go faster.

Re: Excessive road noise and locked up brakes
Thank you all guys. Erik you nailed it. I came back from car mechanic and have bad front right wheel bearing. Glad i didn't buy tires as they have 90% thread left on them. However Michelin Energy Savers are next anyway. I will check on road noise after wheel bearing is replaced and report back. I am expecting little road noise but not louder the my stereo....cmon! ;)
