Hypermiling a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel to 38MPG

On one hand, awesome. On the other hand, he probably did his usual sort of extreme stuff that gives hypermiling a bad name.

Reminds me of the MPG marathon in the UK. The winner last year got 88.6 MPG in a Ford Feista diesel. There was also a van version of the Feista that got 108 MPG.

I actually drove with Wayne on one of his event drives (Truth in 48) and I didn't feel that anything we were doing was unsafe.

That's good to hear. His name has popularly become synonymous with dangerous extreme driving, like going dangerously slow or fast.

People like to trash talk about stuff they don't know or understand. For the bulk of the drive we were driving near the speed limits utilizing a lot of driving under load and manually controlling the transmission with the paddle shifters.

38 MPG isn't bad for a big truck, but I want to know how the guy in the fiesta got 108 MPG!?

38 is totally doable. In the Truth In 48 drive my team was driving a 2014 Q5 TDI Quattro. We averaged 38.5 MPG from LA to NYC, and our average speed for the trip was in the 60's somewhere as I recall. No way we would have made the trip in under 48 hours putting in the right lane at 50 MPH.

The thing that bothers me about the whole thing is why drive a truck? Sure own one and use it when needed, but driving a truck to just get yourself somewhere is like leaving every light on in your house because you might need to pee in the night.

It seems large diesels are becoming more economical, when you look at the large German diesels, they get great figures. BMW's 3.0 litre (V6 or straight 6 not sure) it has 313 HP, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and does 57 MPG. The emissions are at least 50% lower than a Hummer too.

Because limited parking, insurance rates, additional maintenance work or any other reason could mean owning multiple vehicles impracticable. A fuel miser car won't save much on gas if it is parked because the truck does see a lot of use.
