The MPG Marathon!
 

Has anyone heard of this event? I only found out about it a couple of years ago, but I am considering having a go this year. Its a touch nerdy, but it could be fun and I might learn some cool fuel saving techniques. Basically its a 2 day event where drivers use hypermiling techniques in all kinds of cars and vans, and the winners are those who exceeded the official government figures for thier cars, and those with the highest MPG overall. So it's a race with a difference!

I think the winners last year got over 88 MPG, but I did read somwhere that someone got 108 MPG in a Ford Fiesta diesel! If anyone has any info on this, please get in touch as the website is helpful, but doesn't really tell you much about the event details etc.

Well I had a response from one of the event organisers, what I didn't realise is that this is a fleet event with big sponsors etc and there's a £2250 entry fee! Ouch! Anyway, he's put my name down incase there's a car manufacture that wants to promote one of their cars and they need a driver. Not holding my breath, but we'll see what happens :)

That might explain some of the mpg figures. Professionally prepped cars with professional drivers. Not likely to be something the average mortal could duplicate. But those numbers look wonderful in the news coverage and the ensuing advertising.

They are all normal road legal cars with no modifications. And the drivers are generaly members of the public, im certainly no proffesional but I like to think my hypermiling techniques are pretty good :)

Results are in, some very impressive figures here, the winner got over 97 MPG in a Honda diesel estate!
