Average Annual Fuel Use by Vehicle Type

I stumbled onto this chart while looking for something else, and thought it might be of interest. Alternative Fuels Data Center: Maps and Data

Interesting chart, I use about 630 US Gallons per year which is on the heavy side. According to the chart the annual average is 480 US Gallons per year for a car.

I'm surprised about the transit bus, it uses 10,440 Gallons which means you would have to have about 22 people on the bus to make it worth while. I occasionally see buses with about 10 or less people on them.

For comparisons sake, I use about 163 gallons (about 200 us gallons) of fuel, and I guess around 0.43 gallons of oil per year roughly speaking.

It's a shame to think the highest fuel consuming vehicles are also the most polluting with very few emission regs, be it big trucks, trains, planes or freight ships. Still I guess the government has to blame and therefore tax someone! ;)

There are a couple of links at the bottom to charts of average annual mileage and average fuel economy by types of vehicle, as well. I was actually looking for the average annual mileage when I found this chart.

I guess I blow the average out of the water with around 1,200 gallons a year, but I live in a rural area where everything is a minimum 15 mile drive away. It would be interesting to see some statistics for yearly miles driven/fuel consumption in different parts of the country.

I went back to the original from which the chart in my first post came, Alternative Fuels Data Center: Maps and Data and found links to a lot more data. One of interest might be Alternative Fuels Data Center: Maps and Data Make sure to read the notes at the bottom.

No doubt comparable information is available about Europe and/or the UK, and I figure someone will find and post it.

I calculated once to see how much less fuel I would use driving a Chevy Volt compared to my Mercedes C55 over 4 years. Using this site, I figured if I had a Volt for 4 years I would save 2,059 Gallons (7,794L). I know the Volt uses electricity as well, and most of the time fossil fuels are used to make electricity, but still that's a big difference. This is what I figured my fuel usage would be over 4 years:

Mercedes C55: 2,579 Gallons (9,762L)
Toyota Prius C: 1,030 Gallons (3,900L)
Chevy Volt: 520 Gallons (1,968L)

I'm sure you guys know already, but you can set mini stats to track just this if you want. I have one for "total litres fueled" and you can set the time parameter too.

Not the same I know, but this chart shows how the average MPG of cars has changed in recent years. This is UK MPG.
