Naive question on apps....

I see the apps for iOS and Android.
First... let me say. I can't see any reason for me to use data when I leave home. I have better things to do when I go out, than to play with a cell phone.
Now these apps. They are mainly for those cell phone users who just gotta have their toys? I've seen even adding info at the pump. (I got better things to do at the pump. ;) )
I figure. If I go on a trip. I can make a note when I fill up. Just like I do at home. When I get to a hotel. I can just use my firefox and upload here. Correct? I've got an old laptop (mac) and a Samsung net pad. Which is Android. But these are only wi fi. I refuse to pay for data on a cell connection. In fact, I use cell minimally. I refuse to pay lots of money for toys.

I don't have a computer, and living rural, mobile Internet is not worth a damn anyway. I use the desktop site on my mobile and add my fuel ups whenever I'm home. I simply make a note in a note book app on my phone of my mileage and litres. I've never been a fan of apps, they use phone memory and battery.
