It's just a marketing gimmick, and a way for owners to show off really, like I've said numerous times, 0-60 is kind of pointless and irrelevant. I think if Teslas still did 0-60 in 10 or 15 seconds, they would still sell well, if it affected range by much, I'm sure the majority of owners would rather a longer range than a car that pins you in your seat every time there's a green light. Electric cars generally feel fast anyway, and the 0-30 times are quicker than most conventional cars as they can deliver all the power at once. Even owners of Leafs say how "fast" they are and they have sprint time of almost 12 seconds. It's not about a number on a screen, it's about how a car feels.

If i put the Prius in "power" mode it makes the initial acceleration seem pretty fast, though it doesn't affect overall performance or top end speed.
It just makes the throttle extremely sensitive. It is in "eco" mode apart from a few test scenarios! As for the model S, it has probably replaced the maserati quatroporte as my imaginary lottery win big car.... |
"Fastest" is inaccurate, as many production cars will exceed 200 MPH straight out of the showroom, whereas the Tesla is software-limited to 155.
You also can't underestimate the difficulty of getting that nearly-5000-pound beast around a corner in any sort of graceful fashion. "Quickest", maybe, but nowhere near the "fastest". And only as long as you keep it pointed in a straight line. |

https://www.tesla.com/models The 100kWh pack isn't shown yet, but the worse difference in range between the 90D and P90D is 29 miles at 70F at 45mph with 21" wheels. At that speed, both cars will go over 400 miles before needing a charge. The EPA rated range for for the 90D is 294 miles, and 270 miles for the P90D. There isn't a single motor option for the 90kWh pack, but those are less efficient on the smaller batter models than with AWD. |

It's still a better vehicle, because it doesn't need fossil fuels to power it like the rest do. Zero to sixty times is just one small aspect of a car, it would be silly to ignore the other benefits of a BEV. Considering some of those manufacturers have been around for decades, and Tesla have only been around for a few years and they are already beating cars ten times the price is impressive.

Tesla's statements on this usually specify fastest for a four door car. While I would likely select the Ariel Atom for throwing around a track, the lack of a roof really limits its usefulness as a daily driver.
