UK government funding for autonomous truck research

The UK Department of Transport has today announced funding for the Transport Research Laboratory to carry out trials of autonomous truck platoons of self-driving lorries to run in public on major UK roads by the end of 2018. This is part of an £8.1 government scheme to test the feasibility of truck “platooning”.

Well as a truck driver I won't say I'm wild about this, but on the other hand, I have a plan B. So far this makes sense for dedicated routes but isn't all the way there yet for goods which require a more intuitive touch.

I do wish that truckers' GPS had some better logic feeding in everything from traffic data to actual speed over routes off of the interstates (including signals, etc), updating in real time as google maps does. Would be a nice half measure, making us more productive.
