Wasting money on octane?

Does higher octane fuel give you anything except an emptier wallet?

Interesting results, what a great test. An increase in power of up to 20 HP in some cases is worth the extra cost alone, and the fuel here is even higher octane so its a no brainer if you have a performance car in my opinion.

One of the more interesting comparison tests I've seen.

Be aware than the UK, and the US use different measures for octane rating.
The UK uses RON (Research Octane Number), and the US uses AKI (Anti-Knock Index)
95 RON is 90 AKI
Shell V-Power 99 RON is 93 AKI in the US.

Yea i understand that, just didn't realise a better fuel could give 20 HP extra, I would have thought 5, maybe 10 max at a push. I always use premium, although I can only get esso 97, did she'll stop Vpower? Haven't seen it for ages...

My local Shell station sells it. Too pricey for me, even at today's petrol prices.

Except in the case it’s recommended by your owner’s manual, don’t spend money on high octane. Mostly there’s no benefit. Higher octane helps only if you have problems with your engine “knocking.”

I filled up the gti today, first time since March. The difference in price is huge now with regular 95 RON at £1.069 per litre, and the supreme 97 RON at £1.299 per litre. Good job my cars are for my pleasure only, if I was using them to commute, I'd be using the regular stuff.
