Prolly something such can do it, but I'm sure there's something on the ecu thaat'll trigger it. There's a whole chip on the damn ecu to activate it, after all, but who knows.

If the smell is unburned gas I would check spark plugs and other things related to the ignition system. Also check for a small gas leak. Someone might have replaced the fuel filter and not used new washers, etc. I'm hoping that one of the other guys more knowledgable in Hondas will be able to better answer your questions. Wow, that's awesome! Glad to hear you made it home ok. Sounds like you were only about 25-30 miles from my place when you were in Granger, IN. I live about15 miles South of Elkhart(St. Rd. 19) then west 1 3/4 miles. I always thought we had some pretty nice people around here. :)

If the car has a post-cat o2 sensor and the cat is bad, it should cause the CEL to light up. Also (obviously), an emission test would show a bad cat.
My Firefly #1 had a bad cat when I bought it (the catalyst matrix was in tiny pieces inside the muffler). I bought it with the CEL on, courtesy of the post-cat o2 sensor. I didn't notice any odd smells, though maybe I wasn't paying enough attention. EDIT: I agree with Matt - the failure of the pre-cat o2 sensor will eventually destroy the cat. That was the case with my car. |
There's no post cat o2 sensor, but yeah, it could be a dead cat, you could prolly get one from someone, I have a friend that prolly has a spare left over from when he turbo'd his vx. I'll email him now.
