HAI in altima ??? updated with pics
 

A friend of mine inspired by my recent gas saving antics, fabbed a really nice HAI. Initially he noticed a increase in mileage before settling back down. He was averaging 28mpg 70% highway. After the HAI he was able to get 30.9mpg. It had not been in the 30s for a long time (33mpg all time high). After the initial spike it settled into the 28s again.

The car is a 98 altima, 5 spd, he uses the air light to moderate. Of course the spike could have been a fluke, but I think that most likely the car ran lean initially and the computer re trimmed the fuel.

My question, could you get or trick the ecm to take advantage of the hot air?

For my saturn 200 deegrees is the highest effecient HAI temp, any suggestions for a nissan?

i imagine the nissan is clever enough to retard ignition to counter the affects of the hot air, which is prolly what's happening. if he wants to get wicked mileage have him pick up a scangauge!

I used to own a 99 altima. It's the same car only a year younger than your friends's car. Tell him he's wasting time with HAI, CAI, WAI's. The only way to get better mileage is with the stock airbox and a Nissan Air filter, not fram, but the air filter from the dealer.

Look in my garage(gassavers garage) for my altima. Do everything to his car what I did and he is guranteed 31mpg mixed driving. Freeway should be about 38-40mpg.

Well he moved the iat into the intake air stream. I think I'll have him move it away from the hot air.

This afternoon he wrapped the o2 sensor with foil and I pulled iat sensor and laid it on top of the driver side headlight. He tells me after 95 miles he is seeing a signifigant power loss(yay!) and the mileage is substantially better, he is thinking 5mpg or so. Cross your fingers, will see if the ecm relearns to ineffecient. Might as well nock on wood too!

Poor o2 sensor.

I give up.
