I rented a Ford Taurus that had it.

GasSavers_DaX 09-14-2006 05:02 AM

My uncle's older (84? 86? 88?) BMW 318i actually had an analog MPG gauge on the dash.

Nearly all BMWs

Nearly all BMWs have an analog gauge.

Also, regarding the Taurus -- that was an option, I believe (which makes it tough to say this "Model" has it without including the trim level.

2005 Nissan Sentra

Rented a 2005 Nissan Sentra last year. It had one.

Does anything think it would be possible to take one of these units (off of a seville, for example) and put it on another car?

GasSavers_scostanz 09-14-2006 04:57 PM

98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Lots of domestic trucks and vans have them. I would say they are not very reliable but I have no evidence.

Maybach

I think if you had a Maybach, FE would be the absolute least of your worries!!! It is sooo big! I would be watching my favorite F1 race replays while my driver takes me around while lighting my cigar and pulling my merlot out of the refrigerator while getting a massage, cooling, and while laying back in my new favorite ''business'' chair.

I read in the March '07 R&T that on the new BMW 335i sedan dash, "there's a nice oil-temperature gauge inset in the tach, instead of the useless 'instant mpg' needle." :(

OTOH, my '02 325 (E46 body style) has both an analog ('instantaneous' mpg) as well as a digital (averaging). :)

I don't know what's happening in other models nor what the new trend is. If history serves, FE will go down and performance will go up. The disappearing instrumentation is just a jedi mind trick.

swng 02-11-2007 12:37 PM

My Mercedes 04 E320 provides information digitally about FE on a small LED screen in the middle of the speedometer, switchable between immediate and long term average numbers with buttons on the steering wheel. I believe slightly older or any newer models should also be similarly equipped.

2001 Audi TT Quattro Coupe has a digital MPG gauge that gives the average MPG over a certain number of miles

Compaq888 02-12-2007 02:22 AM

my mom's 02 2.5 altima had one. I don't know if her civic has one.

GasSavers_BluEyes 02-12-2007 03:01 AM

My '92 LeBaron has both instant and average in the "Traveler" trip computer. Most Mopar (Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth) cars from that era had this feature available.
Average mpg always has read below calculated mpg at the pump though. The "distance to empty" feature is also always reading less than I think it should. *shrugs* I'll take conservative over optimistic though.

GasSavers_James 02-12-2007 05:48 AM

I can verify that the late 80's early 90's saab 9000 have an instant and average economy meter. It might have been an option on the 900s. The 900's all had a painted on green/yellow/red on the tach for economy. I think the green was below 2200 or so.

Its depressing to watch the instant fe meter in a 99 jeep grand cherokee, but i'm still glad they put it in there.

Only those with the MFA (multi-funktion-anzie something) known in English as the multi function display, mostly the GLX top-of-the-line trim models which include the VR6 engine. '95~97 Passat GLX, '95~99.5 Jetta GLX, 95~99 Golf GLX. Many of the later ('98+) VW also have this feature as part of an upgrade trim level option.
The accuracy in these is dependent on the injectors. Stock injectors produce a display number lower than actual, high flow performance injectors produce a very optimistic display number. The computer can be offset to more closely produce numbers in line with actual, but until I have some more data to determine the correct offset, I'm using the dash display as a better / worse reference and the re-fueling pump display and odometer as the actual fuel economy.

Gary Palmer 02-12-2007 08:16 AM

Chrysler Town & Country Minivans, 1994 and 1998 both have it. They have both an average number and a real time number, which is updated about every 2-5 seconds, but on some kind of a running average basis.
