i'm kind of an ametuer when it comes to hypermilling and some other FE techniques. is their a way i can be FE in the winter months?

keep warmup time to a minimum. keep and eye on tire pressure too. will change in the cold air. where do you live?

- Combine trips if at all possible to reduce the number of warm-up/cool down cycles in a tank.

- Use a block heater.

- Consider a WAI/HAI - it may or may not reduce fuel consumption when the car's already at normal operating temp, but it should help it to get there sooner.

The best way to keep FE high in the winter is to park your car in a heated garage! Drives like a summer day in the dead of winter when it is nice and warm.

Resist any temptation to let the car to warm up. Just scrape off the ice/snow and go.

Isn't that bad for your engine / transmission though?

I'me quite fortunate here , I have a heated car house where it is 30C all year round and an engine block heater as well.
I can drive out of my spot at full operating temperature even when its -35C outside.

You should alow 10 seconds to warm up in cold weather (I can't remember were I heard that). That allows the fluids to move around a bit.

That's what I do some times. Most of the time though, I just use tremendous amounts of washer fluid.:p
