Unfortunately, we're the minority, and probably will be for some time -- but that doesn't mean we can't make a difference.

The article just makes me say, pardon the French, WTF? Do we trust big oil that much? Would we rather pay 100's of extra dollars on gas instead of our families, community, etc?

What is the motive? Find it and break it.

With a trend like this. It is easy to forget. Gas prices actually did raise today.

Yuze all should still be happy , Ime still paying $5.87 a gallon.

And sadly Exxon reported a $10 billion dollar profit for the last three months.

Anybody else notice that the source is CNW Research? These are the same people who claimed that a H2 uses less energy dust-to-dust than a Prius. Pretty much every time I read an anti-hybrid, anti-FE story it's CNW behind the stats. I do believe that people are becoming complacent again, but it's VERY difficult to trust this particular source.

Yes, I know. On the other hand, much of our non-gasoline taxes are used to subsidize the oil industry; some directly and some less directly. We directly give them about $15B for drilling incentives. We waive their royalty fees. We spend hundreds of billions (and many young lives) protecting their worldwide infrastructure. Iraq is what, $2B/day? It all adds up and we pay for it all. There was a study done in 1998 when gas was $2/g that put the real price at between $6/g and $15/g. Imagine how much this has gotten worse in the last 8 years.

That cheesy little $2.19/g we pay is such a small part of the picture and it's that way by design. Is it any wonder we squander as much oil per capita as we do here in the good ole USA?

ANy chance you know of any sources for any of this? I'd love to make an article out of it.

As a quick response Matt, I'd cite the International Center for Technology Assessment (CTA) study The Real Price of Gasoline 11/1998 as a baseline. I know it's already getting old but realistically, what has changed except for a proportional increase in economic indicators and the obvious huge increase in foreign military campaigns. CTA did two updates Gasoline Cost Externalities Associated With Global Climate Change 9/2004 and
Gasoline Cost Externalities: Security and Protection Services 1/2005 but it was compiled before the most 2005 federal energy policy (another source) which upped the subsidies to $14B - $15B. I'd have to re-research the articles I read a few months back. IHTH
