Honda: how do I tell which car this is?
 

Hey guys,

Well, I'm very focused on getting a Metro but I know a Honda Civic is probably #2 or 3 when it comes to general fuel economy.

Anyway, I found a beat-up (I'm sure it could be fixed) old Honda Civic online:

The website it is on just says it's a "1991 Honda Civic 1.5L 4-cyl manual"
So how do I tell which one it is?
- Honda Civic
- Honda Civic CRX
- Honda Civic CRX HF

Any guesses?

it is a civic hatchback standard

if stock:

d15b1 engine
dual point fuel injection
70hp
16 valve
4 spd manual
prolly no a/c

I have the same. great car, gutless motor with mediocre mpg.

b4 i converted to an hf tranny, it had decent power and got about 33-35mpg.
now about 40, but no torque below 3000rpm, b/c the hf is geared so high, and the motor has no low end torque.

Well, sorry, I guess if the moderators want to move this thread with my introductory topic it's okay with me. I just thought it wouldn't get the expert attention I needed if I asked in my introductions thread that some people might ignore.

Anyway, I do know what a Honda CRX is, but I was talking about the Honda Civic CRX versus the Honda Civic CRX HF. They're both hatchbacks, very similar looking to the Metro/Swift/Fiesta. But I don't know how to tell if the car in my first post is a Civic CRX or a Civic CRX HF.

revs high on highway due to lack of 5th gear, but gearing optimizes performance from such a gutless motor. Would be a fun car with a dx or si transmission. :thumbup:

Thanks for the great info budomove. If I may ask, how are you able to tell by the pictures/small amount of info that it's a Civic CRX (standard) and not a CRX HF? I'd be interested in knowing.

Edit: ah, so it's not even a Civic CRX, just a Civic standard hatch? I guess I was mislead on it by some of the info I read, my bad.

you can tell it is a std and not a dx or si by the lack of pass side mirror, the black panel b/w the taillights/lack of rear wiper(although the hatch lid was a replacement it seems), and the steel wheels which are less common on dx's and non existent on the si.

That's a 4th Generation Honda Civic, the Honda Civic Hatchback. I consider that to be my favorite Honda hatchback in terms of looks (built-in spoiler!!!) :

If you want to be an MPG star, you want a 5th gen Honda Civic hatchback, VX designation.

The best way to tell if a CRX is a CRX or a CRX HF is if it has the "HF" logo on the back.

Other than that, there are a few ways to distinguish them visually.

FYI, the CIvic pictured is a MPG king, but not like the CRX HF or the Civic VX (92-95).
