Old, old (pre85) EPA.

Does anyone know how to read these dos files? They're zipped, and on the EPA's site, but the notation is just odd. For instance, this is under the results for Toyota pickups
Quote:

2AY 23.7023 30.0929 26.2067 6 TRUCK 2WD
2MY 24.7000 32.3802 27.6514 6 TRUCK 2WD
2MY 23.6996 33.5997 27.3223 6 TRUCK 2WD
2MY 24.4001 31.6379 27.2003 6 3/4 TON TRUCK 2WD
2MY 23.6996 33.5997 27.3223 6 3/4 TON TRUCK 2WD
2MY 18.3000 20.2000 19.1088 6 CAB CHASSIS (CALIF)
And my truck is an 82 CA emissions spec 2WD, which is pretty easy to differentiate for the 1985 EPA measurements, but I'm not sure which one of these my truck actually is for these actual 82 measurements. Would it be the cab chassis, since it's the only one that mentions CA, or one of the others? If it was the last on the list, it would explain why my uncle pulled the same mileage driving pedal to the metal on the freeway, but the term cab chassis almost sounds like a work truck...

Has anyone had luck contacting Toyota about these things?

EPA Raw Data Interp.

Cab Chassis are generally the raw cab and blank-rear frame to add the end-user's custom requirements: such as a box/van for parcels, stake-unit for farm use, a flatbed for car hauling, etc. My guess is that designation is a 1-ton model, which must have only been sold in California.

2AY may be automatic and 2MY may be the '82 manual-transmission.

The difference in the double entries aren't clear, but are probably the Calif emissions and 49-state differentiations (since there are 2 in each 1/2- and 3/4-ton varieties).

The 6 meaning probably means either a 6-cylinder engine or "Class-6" size, and each nubmer value is the average, specifically tested mileage of City/Hwy/Combined.

If you have a 1/2-ton, CA-Emission Manual, I'd try to find out if better emissions meant a sacrifice in FE -- look at other models from the spreadsheet to see if CA-emission models in any other vehicle generally means a hit, or increase in FE. Then you can determine if the 2nd or 3rd entry is yours.

Purely speculation: your EPA FE is 24-25/32-34/27-28.

Those were all the 2WD Toyota trucks, but the only one that mentions CALIF is at the bottom. The other CALIF vehicles seem to have taken mileage hits compare to the normal 49 state vehicles, and I'm not sure what the 6 means, but most of the vehicles have it, or a 9. I'm pretty sure M/A means manual/automatic, the 2 means 2 barrel carburettor, since FI is also in that column, and the Y has something to do with yearly emissions. But those are just guesses... Actually, looking at, there were some numbers left out, and my truck must be 25/32/28, since the two Ms have

in order, with M4 being the 4speed, and M5 being the 5speed.

Thanks for the help! Although using these EPA measurements kill my percentage... I wonder how lenient the new EPA is compared to the really old EPA? Heck, my VW's supposed to get 60mpg highway, and the best I saw round trip was ~53mpg. Course this was with no attention paid to anything except driving ~45-60mph, but jeez, that's a big jump. I wish we could get an older vehicle on for one of the new tests. :D
