The site is in German, but has a lot of good pics of 1930's German streamlined cars with aero ideas we could use on our current vehicles.

Nature uses them for roll stability... But I'm not quite certain that shape is beneficial in cross wind :/ Perhaps it divides the flow to keep any shedding vortices from mingling near the boundary layer? Just a guess.
