Z-39.34 and 63.91 over. basjoos needs to update to the new numbers. I think his drops all the way down to 38 mpg

Lug_Nut 03-12-2007 03:48 PM

The Passat is also a five manual.
I didn't top off the fuel tank to start this. I've been, if not exactly good about FE, at least not wasteful so far on this most recent fill-up. I'm at 400+ trip miles and still showing above 'full' on the gauge with an on-board display of 45+ mpg since last filling.
Now that I have the summer tires on (44psi and lower resistance than the 36 psi max snow tires I took off) and since I also have this friendly challenge as an added incentive to fuel economize, I hope to improve.

basjoos 03-12-2007 05:31 PM

I updated my car to the new EPA numbers (42/33/37).

GasSavers_Brock 03-12-2007 06:06 PM

I updated mine as well.

Lug your EPA numbers look like gasser numbers for the TDI? Were they really that low for diesel?

GasSavers_Brock 03-12-2007 06:20 PM

Oh ya that’s right. The diesel version was rated at 31-35-41. Should we use those numbers since that's what the diesel was rated at or is that just considered a modification? That might get team 1 closer to team 2 to start.

Just throwing out an idea as to who wins (beside all of us). Maybe go by a % change from what the numbers now to 1 month and 2 months and so on?

So right now

team 1 is 77.92
team 2 is 68.05

after a month say team one is at 79.92 and team 2 is at 71.05. The team 1 would be 2% up and team 2 would have beat us being 3% up?

That way we start where we were to even the playing field?

Let's not use this thread for discussions it will get to off topic. Let's discuss on the other thread. I'll pick this up on the other team FE thread.

diamondlarry 03-14-2007 01:00 PM

I'm going to be filling up tonight. Is this the right thread for posting my results? According to the guage, things are looking good.

MetroMPG 03-14-2007 01:28 PM

Sure, yeah. If you feel like double-posting to the regular update thread, that's fine.

Will there be a seperate update thread for the team challenge updates? If so, has it been created yet?

MetroMPG 03-14-2007 02:22 PM

I think that's this thread. I'll probably edit the first post with stats as they're generated.

Metro it's easy enough to start a team weekly MPG update thread for folks to post once a week. What would be easier for you as far as getting results? it might be better to just have this thread for offical results. There will probably be alot of comments after each MPG update.

diamondlarry 03-14-2007 03:41 PM

First tank of the challenge. 301.2 miles and 5.17 gallons used for 58.259 mpg. I'll post details later in the official thread when it's created.

Go ahead and post it here, Larry. We're going to stick with just the 2 threads. I'll post a hyperlink to the top post whenever I update it.

zpiloto 03-15-2007 10:11 AM

It also might make it easier if teams put their entry with other teammates by using the quote button. That way all teams entries will be on the last thread and you don't need to go looking for the others.

Let try to make entry either by fills or SG numbers(if you have it) by Sunday of every week. Give mileage, gallons and tank MPG.

BeeUU 03-15-2007 03:13 PM

Since I do not have a ScanGauge, should I be filling up once a week?

Or should I wait for the end of the month?

Some weeks I may not get through 3 gallons....sorry.

No just fill at the end of the month or whenever you are ready. We'll just use your current % EPA from the gaslog.

DRW 03-15-2007 08:29 PM

I filled up tonight for my first tank of the competition. There's nothing like a little competition to motivate me. I got a new personal best at 41.87mpg! Warmer weather and summer wind patterns have returned recently. I hope the weather holds, I like these results!

edit: I just noticed that I broke through the barrier and hit an average of 5.99L/100KM. cool

Nice. Looking at your gaslong you're 3 MPG better then you were in June of last year. Some incredible numbers for the Lazer.

Everyone go back and look at your historical data and see what kind of FE you were doing this time last year. I think you'll be supprised by the results.

Yeah! Too bad we don't have a team name yet! Open to suggestions...

And too bad I haven't contributed. I guess I'm actually starting next week. Have some trips coming up.

I'll update the "results" tomorrow evening. So if anyone wants to post last week's results who hasn't, now's your chance.

zpiloto 03-17-2007 02:37 PM

No tank fill but according to the SG ( which is not dialed in yet) I've gone 211 miles on 5.0 gallons for a MPG of 41.6.

Pretty decent day today. Temp started at ~25F and has warmed up to 45F. Winds have been 0-5 mph from the SW.
1)52.2-5.2 miles(church)
2)64.1-5.2 miles(home)
3)67.9-11.5 miles(out to eat)
4)60.3-11.5 miles(home)
Average for today: 61.7

We were planning on doing weekly updates so if you have filled give the results and if you have not filled and have FE instrumentation give those results. One per week only please.

Lug_Nut 03-18-2007 12:05 PM

Factory "MFA" data, pretty close, but still not calibrated to the diesel engine: 46.3 mpg.
29 hrs, 42 min of engine operation, 1035 miles, 34 mph average. I have an indicated 7 gallons of fuel remaining so I'll likely be filling by next weekend.
And the taller snow tires went back on due to the snow here. Maybe next weekend those can come off again.

MetroMPG 03-18-2007 05:50 PM

Week 1 standings updated at the top of this thread: https://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?p=43540

With 6 of 10 drivers reporting FE monitor readings or fills:

Team 2 is leading with a 13.3% average improvement, vs. Team 1 OPEC Busters' 4.6% average.

Z: looks like repete86 may have filled this week but didn't report it in this thread. I'll update the results if that's the case.

I'm sure repete86 will list his fill here when he reads the post. Everyone let's not forget to post fills here or SG results once a week so we can keep the standing updated.

Your team is doing a great job. Next week will be interesting I think we will more data for results. Yall need a name?

I throw a few names out for ya to get you started. MPG Killers, Modified for FE, CEO Bonus Busters. Resource management.

MetroMPG 03-19-2007 04:59 AM

I was trying to come up with a play on "Peak Oil", but nothing jumped out at me.... Peak Toil ... Peak Foil ... Haven't Peaked Yet

Then I remembered XFi's sig quote. It was a good one: "Lighter, Slower, Further"

BeeUU 03-19-2007 06:14 AM

Update

I can not use a scan gauge on my car, but previously I thought I was doing really well when I would travel 112 miles on a quarter tank. I am at 90 miles and the needle is just moving off the Full mark. Cool.

It might me next week before I can fill to get the min of 3 gallons. I have a few long trips this week so I will be using a bit more fuel.

MetroMPG 03-19-2007 06:21 AM

For the purposes of the competition, if you're confident you can estimate your MPG at a given mark on your fuel gauge, go for it.

I owned my Accord long enough (8 yrs) to be able to estimate within about 5% what my fuel consumption was by noting the distance traveled at the first & halfway tick marks on the gauge.

BeeUU 03-19-2007 06:42 AM

Actually, this is fairly new ground for me, FE wise. :) I am going to wait for a fill-up next week to see what I get, I will use this experience for estimating later in the year.

GasSavers_Brock 03-19-2007 07:17 AM

I have no idea how far off my SG is so I am leery of posting what it says. I think right now it is set optimistic. I reset the "tank" all the time to get averages over time. I also leave it set the same all the time so I can compare trips in the last fill to trips in this fill rather then correct it every fill. I will fill next week though just to get real numbers.

Make sure you burn enough not to get a penalty. The offical stats are posted every 30 days. Take your time, 3 gallons is the minimum but lets shoot for more than that if you are not time limited. Their up on us now but we have had only one team member fill. I think the next couple of weeks we'll be back in the hunt.:D

MetroMPG 03-21-2007 05:19 PM

Well, the drought is over.

Filled up today, so I now have my "official" starting point for the competition, and it wasn't pretty. The SG was further off than I think I've ever seen it - told me my tank avg was 63.x, but according to the pump calculation it was actually 59 mpg (US). Haven't seen a tank that low in literally a year! (Well, it was my "winter" tank.)

Need to add more offset to the SG.

Ah but the good news in 30 days the % over 59 will be pretty drastic. What was the difference in the gas price in four months?:)

When you fill up once a quarter, maybe you should buy gas one liter at a time. ;)

...then again, seeing that a full tank is a minor investment, maybe you should do so only when the prices are dropping. :D
