I filled the tank up today for a new personal best. 11.617 gallons for 494.4 miles = 42.56mpg! :) I think the new driving technique is paying off.
|
I filled up last night. By far, new record tank... 514.2 miles on 8.526 gallons of gas = 60.31 mpg  . That station had 89 for the same price as 87, so I filled up with 89 to see if it makes a difference. It may help me lug the engine on early upshifts :) .
The start of this new tank wasn't too good this morning. I had to fight a thunderstorm in the dark on my way to work with high winds and torrential rains. |
I filled up last night. I had 358.8 miles and used 6.295 gallons for 56.998 mpg.
|
First Fill for me in the competition. 371.1 miles and 8.962 gallons for 41.63 MPG at 34 MPH. I haven't peaked yet. It should have been close to 43 but got stuck on the interstate due to a major accident and lost over 1 MPG on my tank:mad: I've got the LRR tires on now so next tank will reflect that. Go Team OB!
|
I just got 37.91mpg, over 196.3 miles, and 5.18 gallons :). This tank is a commuting tank, and this is the best I have ever got for a pure commuting tank!. My next tank won't be so good - started well, but I started the car about 40 times trying to test SuperMID with my Oscilloscope :( The fuel gauge dropped significantly (I managed to warm the engine up to the point where the cooling fans came on, twice, without moving the car at all).
|
This week: 4 miles, 74.9 mpg (SG), 14 mph avg. :o I've been biking everywhere since the weather warmed up.
And I still haven't re-adjusted the SG - it was overly optimistic on my last fill up. I'll do the weekly summary later this evening - everybody get your reports in if you haven't already. |
1,213 miles on 25.88 gallons: 46.87 mpg
Topped off the tank yesterday. It took 22 gallons. The total fuel is 25.88 gallons when the 3.88 gallons of petrodiesel I had used in an interim to further thin the biodiesel blend (unexpectedly cold two weeks ago) is added. The overall blend ended up averaging B45. The onboard display showed 48.6 mpg average, not that far off the amount consumed. It also showed a 34 mph average, 34 hours 55 minutes of operation and the 1,213 miles. |
Scangauge: 72 MPG for 137 miles 3/20/07 thru 3/25/07.
|
Sorry, I forgot to post my last two tanks.
DATE: MILES: GAL.: MPG: 03/21/2007 202.1 4.85 41.67 03/15/2007 223 6.462 34.50 |
I forgot about the left coasters being a couple hours behind. So I'll update the results tomorrow. (Plus with 2 weeks data, I have to change my spreadsheet to properly weigh the 2 weeks' reports.)

Update
No Scanguage, but I am at a quarter of a tank with 217 miles, I am estimating around 40mpg. This was all short trips to work, never really drove with a warmed up engine. All this coasting with the lights on is tough on the battery. I did get a chance to change the plugs. The weather is standard northwest, 40's-50's and rain. Wont see the sun for a couple of more months.....:( Solar panel is not doing much good. I might fill this week to get some numbers posted for the OPEC Busters!!

Top off
I filled up a lunch today: 6.23 gal - 231.1 miles = 37 mpg. All short trips in the cold and rain. I am looking forward to warm weather, plus daylight in the morning will help to drain the battery less, thus less alternator will be required to charge it up again. Ultimately alternator-less.:)
I am trying to squeak in time for a least a front pan to help with the engine temps. Probably will be a quick and dirty, not quite the masterpieces that have been posted recently, nice work out there guys!! |

I filled today, not a full tank but....... 213 miles....6.5 gal......32.7 mpg
|
My SG said 58 last week and it was 62 this week. I have a feeling that is low, I am at 1/2 tank and 550 miles, last summer on my 60mpg tanks I was at 500 miles at 1/2 tank. I am holding off filling until April.

Man, how do you go 1000 miles between fills? I'm ready to fill after about 200 miles just to see where I'm at. You have inspired me. I'll shoot for a 500 mile tank:D |
Week 2 standings updated at the top of this thread: https://www.gassavers.org/showthread.php?p=43540
14 out of 15 drivers reporting FE monitor readings or fills: [EDIT Mar 27/07: screwed up a line in the spreadsheet - the figures in this post are incorrect. Corrected results posted a few posts down.] Team 3 "GasMisers5" with 21.6% above their starting % over EPA stats edged out... Team 2 "Slow Burn" who managed 19.7% this week. Team 1 "Opec Busters" wasn't too far back, at 12.7%. A particularly outstanding performance by omgwtfbyobbq (50.2% above his starting figures!) helped push his team into the forefront. |
What week are we in now? I think this fillup is a little early but I couldn't wait to see how I was doing. I bested my mileage at each 1/4 tank checkpoint so I knew it was going to be a good tank. I also filled up tonight after work instead of filling up in the morning on my way to work. I read somewhere it's better to run errands after the car is fully warmed up.
This tank took 11.821 gallons for 526.4 miles = 44.53mpg. This may not be another personal best since I filled up in a new place where the car might have been tilted slightly. If I didn't get a truely full top-off it will show up on my next tank. Or I might just get another personal best next time! Go Slow Burn! |

Mixed up a line of data in the spreadsheet last night. Turns out omgwtfbyobbq's results really were too good to be true! Also fixed a .1% error in Team 1's figures.
The corrected standings for this week: Team 1: 12.8% Team 2: 19.7% Team 3: 15.4% Apologies to Team 3. Team 2 rocks!! Stupid computers... :o |

Doesn't matter if you fill up multiple times in the week, just as long as you record everything. I'll add together multiple fills. |
Lug is that the every mod?
|
I returned my IAT back to stock over the weekend and I could tell right away that the SG was off. I couldn't stand the suspense of waiting until my normal fill day of Wednesday so I filled up tonight. I drove 220.5 miles and used 3.82 gallons for 57.7 mpg. SG was reporting 54.3 with 4.1 gallons used. With the recalibrated SG, I got 77.5 on the 6.1 mile trip home from the station.

I located a few 680 ohm resistors in a box of odds and ends if the 1000 ohm shunt isn't enough to keep me happy. I've noticed that I can now run almost a gear higher on hills at the same road speed. That doesn't reduce fuel use, but I can also use noticeably less accelerator pedal on level road which may (or may not) use less fuel. Still too soon to tell if economy is increased as the display implies, or of the extra hill climbing power and the lesser pedal position on level are merely my right foot requesting less fuel to offset some electronic increase with no net fuel use reduction. The fuel gauge still hasn't moved. |
i am completely out of the loop on where i need to post my info and what not.
I filled up today for the first time in the competition 540.5 miles 9.4 gallons of gas for 57.5 mpg gas was $2.49 |
OK, just doing my bit to help GasMisers5 along :)
Latest tank 296.7 miles 7.24 gallons of petrol for 41.0mpg (US) This was a tank of cold-start commuting, and also, in my new job I do a lot of cold-start 0.8 miles drives, and a lot of those have happened with this tank (I didn't have to do this before Feb). This is a record tank about 10% better than my last cold-start tank, which was about 10% better than my previous cold-start tank :D This tank was 86% above EPA. |
here's my weekly mpg report... I've driven 300 miles on approximatly 4.75-4.8 gallons= somewhere around 62.5-63 mpg. This is a gas gauge estimate at my "1/2 tank" mark. Gas prices shot up 30 cents a gallon yesterday  or I would have filled early for a more accurate weekly report :o .
|
No report for me this week. The SG rest and defaulted my engine size and it took me a while to catch it. According to SG I"m at 39.8 but according to the gauge and mileage this is my best tank every. "Shrug" I'll fill at the end of the week.
Go Team OP! |
I filled up yesterday and used 3.90 gallons to go 203.1 miles for 52.08 mpg.
|
Filled today....278 miles 10.2 gal. .. 27.2 mpg
Used E 15 this tank, plus did at least 100 miles in the rain, had to have lights wipers and defrost on constantly. |
My SG is at 62 again this week. I used to think it was high, now I am thinking low. I should fill later this week.
|
No need to refill yet, still 10 gallons indicated remaining. Onboard display numbers:
55.1 mpg 758 miles in 19 hr, 16 min for an average of 39 mph. A few more days will tell if the electronic modification to the fuel pump has really increased the mileage or if it is just screwing with the display numbers. |
Quote:
Go Team OP! Finishing up strong. |
I only had one trip this week: 79.4 mpg (US) round trip, 55 mi. total.
I'll wait until tomorrow to update the stats, to give the left coasters and other stragglers time to submit their numbers. |
MPG update
April 1, 2007 9:37 PM MDT
Winter is not over yet here in Colorado. It has been snowy and 15-20 degrees at night for the past week. I have not driven the car at all this week till yesterday. Scanguage readings for week March 26 thru Apr 1, 2007: Trip to neighbor's garage 6.2 miles 122 mpg. One way because car is still there. Saturday morning temp 16 degrees. Our places are close to equal elevations but there is a 200 ft. gradual drop and a 200 ft. steeper rise between us. The balance of the distance is fairly level. The best previous mpg I remember seeing at this distance is 82 mpg(summer). So the belt and component deletions with the added cold-start-warm-up techniques are responsible for considerable gain for this stretch. I have taken the time to make room in the garage for Old Reliable. I have been working on making my cold starts and the first part of my trips more mpg productive. The past few days I installed a block heater I have had for months and installed a heater in the water hoses. Also put on an oil pan heater, this may end up on transmission later. All were on for about 8 hrs overnight Friday. Also put R-30 insulation batt between engine and hood overnight to help hold the heat. Used R-30 batts all around the bottom of the car from the garage floor up around the body. Made sure my battery was fully charged as alternator is still off car. Friday I got word from a neighbor that he could help me with installing my new transmission ratios this weekend. I have my alternator off for repair and mod and had to figure out a way to drive the 6 miles to his garage. I took a page from MetroMPG and started looking around for a way to jerry-rig a temporary belt to the water pump. I cut a piece of rubber from a truck inner tube across the tube so it stayed in one continuous piece. Was close to proper length but pump turns opposite direction of crank pulley. So I used my farm background and put a twist in the belt to correct the pump rotation. Believe it or not, it works. In the bargain, I ended up disconnecting the air conditioning compressor and the power steering along with the alternator. Also rid of the drag of two idler pullies, belt tensioner, and about 12 ft. of belt. May need to figure ways to make this a permanent arrangement. CO ZX2 |
