hi, i have a civic dx
 

hi, my name is wayne, and after looking at gassavers.org for a few months and was shocked at how some people got 80 mpg on a civic hatch, i wanted to learn how. I usually get 38 mpg contantly, and that is with me flooring the gas pedal once or twice per day.


then yesterday it costed me more than 30 dollars to fill up my civic, which has a 8-9 gallon tank. it got to the point where i think i should drive more efficently.

I have inflated my tires to 42 psi in the front, and 39 in the back. i will try and aim for 45 mpg on my next tank, hopefully 400 miles (9 gallons). i drive to school everyday about 12 miles. i plan to drive about 60 mph when there is no cars behind me, and 65 max when there is a car behind me. i will draft a bus or semi when i see one, but not too close, maybe about 20 feet. also, will not floor it for the whole tank. hopefully i can achieve the goal.

current setup:
1994 civic dx coupe, 5 speed

intake, header, exhaust
no a/c or power steering
13' rims in front 42 psi, 14' in back with 39 psi

i guess i wont be doing anything to the car that looks odd, such as a grille block, wheel covers, etc.

as for my commute today, i was drafting a semi and its kinda funny, i was changing lanes to go behind the truck, and another car was trying to do the same thing.. draft the semi.

so i choose another semi and thats the end of the story.

Welcome to GasSaver's. I have been running 55psi in my tires for about 9 month's. You can do a grill block which isn't noticable,but effective. You just need to block off the radiator intake and it does make a noticible difference, particularly on a great base, like you have. A 5% improvement is 2 miles/gallon, withwhere your at.

Welcome to the site Wayne. There are at least 2 of us w/ the same generation DX as yours. Mine is a '95 hatchback. Scostanz (username) is a 94 DX Coupe like yours. Scostanz has owned his longer, and has done several mods including swapping out his transmission for a '92 - '95 CX tranny. I believe his lifetime fuel economy is around 47 mpg. I've only owned mine for a couple of months and so far have a lifetime FE of about 47 mpg. My mods include front grille block and 44 psi in all tires. My tires are not LRR, so I'm lacking in this area. In the next few weeks I'm installing a '93 CX tranny. Based on Scostanz's experience, this is good for about a 6% increase in FE.

thats nice.. i'm going to pump my tires to 44 psi each tomorrow, since all my tires are 44 psi max pressure when cold. also i have a friend that want to do this mpg thing too, hes getting 24 mpg combined in a 06 crv se, 5 speed automatic

I just signed up for gassavers.org I recently just got a 1994 Honda Civic DX 4 door Sedan for the heck of it thinking I would save gas. Yesterday I did the MPG thing and I got 164 miles out of approx. 6.7 gallons. It came out to a bit shy of 25 miles per gallon. This is a mix of city and highway driving. I am a bit disappointed because my 03 Camry gets about 23-24 MPG on average.
