Route change?

I know of at least one thread about route changes. Thought I'd start my own.

Old route: 64 mile commute to work each way. 32 miles freeway. 32 miles rural road with 9 stop signs along the way. 37 MPG average. 1.72973 gallons used each way.

New route: 74 mile commute... 70 miles freeway. Last few days I've managed 41 to 45 MPG to and from work. @43 MPG, that's 1.72093 gallons. If I can mainage 45 MPG that's 1.64444 gallons. At best, that's a 0.85285 gallon savings every morning and again that afternoon, even though I'm driving 10 miles more. In a week I'll have saved 8.528529 gallons over the old shorter route! Now that's gas savings! That's more than 2/3rd a 12-gallon tank! Whoohoo!

And it takes nearly the same amount of time with the new route. 1 hour and 18 minutes the old route, 1 hour and 20 minutes the new route. And I'm not stressed out by tailgaters on the rural roads doing everything but running me off the road at 60+ MPH because they have get to their destination first.

I don't need to watch that new TV series "Drive". I lived it everyday on that old route.

I've changed just one thing when engine-ON coasting in neutral... I've been paranoid about the throwout bearing failing by holding the clutch pedal down for extended periods-newbie stick shifter since Sept 2006 but vastly "matured" since then. Found out that I gain 3MPG more instantaneous MPG when coasting at 55 MPH+ in neutral with the clutch pedal down vs up. Makes sense... clutch pedal down separates the clutch and input shaft from the engine. Now with EOC with clutch pedal down and neutral yields further/faster coasting. Still don't want to abuse the T/O bearing, but 50 MPG doesn't seem too far off now... 44.77 MPG this last tank!

Look out Peakster, I'm gaining on you!
