Fuel Additive - ether
Just received an email from a friend in Florida that met a guy very carefully adding ether to the gas in a Scion xB and getting 60mpg.
Anyone every hear of using ether to boost gas mileage - I know it increases performance and can produce pink exhost smoke - at least it used to in the old days when leaded gas was popular. |
I have not heard of anyone using it. But I often wondered how or if it would help mpg. I just assumed it would evaporate before it got used.
|
I know that my little diesel modle air plane engine is suposed to run on a mix of caster oil, kerosen, and ether, but never heard of someone useing it in gasoline.
|
Where can you even get ether and how much does it cost and at what ratio?

but the question is... what kind of ether is being added? There's a few out there.... at least one of which is already used in gasoline to  |
isnt that a drug? fear and loathing in las vegas anyone?
|
why didnt he tell u what it was
|
duh my bad, what is ether made of and how much would u put in
|
Nope and I doubt I will find out but it is more controlled because of the use of it to produce drugs - probably a good start would be starter fluid in a spray can. Used to start diesel engine in cold weather often and known to blow them up.

I just did a run with the sable today with ether. I went to the gas station and got some starting fluid. 10 oz. can for 1.98 I held the can upside down and pressed the nozzle to let all the air out. then I punched a hole in the top of the can and poured it into a container. then used a funnel and poured all of it in my tank. I figure I had about 10/11 gal in tank so about 1 oz. per gal.
The trip to my mothers, 55 miles each way mostly north/south. 85% hwy 15% city North 38mpg south 35.9 mpg...... average.. 36.95 mpg. lots of traffic on the way home. This is by far the best mpg I have got on this trip. I take this trip maybe 2 times a month for years, my best ever previous was 34.5 average. So does the Ether work? It looks promising, But I need to do more testing. some of you guys should give it a try and post your results. |
What were the conditions today and during your last trip?

BTW, what was the temperature and wind like when you did your trip with ether? Could we see a map of your route? Did the car drive/smell/look funny? |
The only thing that worried me was the ether. There is nothing more irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and i knew we would be getting into that rotten stuff sooner or later...
|
HA HA HA HA HA yeah the cost is going to be a factor - the guy that told me about it called tonight and I will call him back tonight and ask him for more info.
You may want to mix it in a small amount of gasoline and then add to the tank so that it doesn't disolve the filler spout should yours be plastic. This will also show how well it mixes with gasoline. Just so you all know about ether a little . . . a drop on my gas stove 1 foot from a lit burner ignited from the fumes traveling towards the heat so BE CAREFUL!! |
It's going to be difficult for me to avoid going on a Hunter S. Thompson inspired binge when I put this crap into my car if I try it.
|
I have a bad feeling about anyone messing with ether very much...
|
weather was about 70F with 5-10 mph winds from the south. I have made this trip a 100 times in all kinds of weather conditions. my average mpg for the trip is about 31. last summer I had a trip of 34.5 mpg on a nice calm sunny day that was the best tip ever until today.
Yes I dumped in the whole can, is it too much? maybe I could use less? car did not look, smell or run funny. however when I removed the gas cap I could really smell the ether. sorry no map I can't figure out how to save or copy one, without printing it. |
|
so do u have to put in either when the car is cold or when u get to a gas station
|
Talked to my friend tonight and thinks that it may have been a pint of ether added to the tank of gas. He just met the guy by chance and will not see him again so there is no way of finding out how much was being used. MTBE is an ether btw.
