my friends car gets same mileage no matter what?
 

my friend has a 06 crv se, 4x4 5 speed auto.

he gets 24 mpg average before he started to do a challenge to get 30 mpg. normally, he drives 70 mph, goes into VTEC twice per day, and doesnt draft trucks.

then last week he wanted to try to hit 30 mpg, so i helped him pump all his tires from 29 psi to 44, and he never floored the gas pedal, went 55 mph all the time, 60 when a cars behind him, and drafted trucks about 4 times out of the whole tank. he put in 11 gallons and came out with 270 miles, which goes to 24.5 mpg.

is there something wrong or its just how the new honda's are?

also a scanguage 2 is on the way to be installed

The SG II will certainly help, but that does seem odd, it could be pump error...I've had oddities coming out to a few MPG on other side because of using different pumps or just having it click off too soon.

Just have him keep it up and see if things change, especially with the SGII. He can test his work trips with different driving techniques and have reliable numbers in each circumstance.

I agree.... before I came here (Well, I still do), I try to use the same pump at the same gas station for consistency :thumbup:

Ya, fill volume is probably the culprit.

the same thing happens to me somtimes i can beat it with 90++ mph runs and it will still come out 28.somthin every time. and if i hypermile it it will be around 28-29.

I say, send 'em over here to GS for a full work-up.

Consistency is key. A driving change isn't going to show-up with better FE overnight. The Gen'l discussion thread's sticky area is a good start...

my trucks the same way kinda. around ehre it doesnt get much better than 25. but i did take a long interstate trip and it got 27. but it was raining one way of it the entire way so that didnt help.

I used to get 26 consistently around town and 26 consistently on the highway at 65-70 mph. Aerodynamics are the culprit for me. Still haven't had a highway trip with the air dam and undertray.

yea i blame that alot. since mine is a truck lately ive been hauling a 4X8 trailer around alot and up alot of steep hills (one where i could get only up to about 20 mph in 2nd gear going about 2500rpms) so this tank is going to really suck. i still want to take a long trip with my truck with its summer wheels on and see if it makes a difference.

Were there any changes in elevation, winds, or route? How many runs had he done with tires at the lower psi and speed at 70mph? rh77 is right on, consistency is the key to figuring out the changes in mpg, so unless he does a few round trip same weather runs at a 55mph average/pumped tires, and a few round trip same weather runs at a 70mph average/normal tires, there's no way to decisively say much.
