92 MX-3 B6 1.6 with SOHC?

Looking around at some information I have found on this car, I would figure that it could/would get good gas mileage. Most owners report no more 30's for highway mpg

I am just curious as to why it wouldn't get good gas mileage with that small of an engine with aerodynamics that are probably pretty good.

Gear ratio and weight?

Just guessing here:
Geared low
wide tires
aerodynamics not as good as they first appear.

Gearing

It's a sporty roadster with an agressive 4-cylinder and low-gearing. They completely tear-up the Autocross course. I'm sure that they can be hypermiled with the 5-speed, low stance and light weight, though...

Wonder if my protege transmission could be used instead.

Not sure what the gear ratio is on it though.
