Just got an extra 5 mpg!
 

I just filled up and calculated my mileage. 24.2. I was getting consistently 19 to 20 combined for a long time.

To my story - I had a vacuum hose come loose (think that's what it's called). I was seeing a slow but steady downslide in mileage. Finally, it came right off and caused all sorts of difficult to diagnose problems.

Anyway, now that it's back on, I get consistently 24 mpg combined. Not only that, I'm leaving early and driving the speed limit (70 where I live). That might have something to do with it.

But it's my guess that the loose hose was causing the biggest loss of mileage.

The luggage rack comes off this weekend. I have had the vehicle for 2 years and never used that blasted thing.

I'm glad I was tracking my gas mileage for the first 2 years I owned the vehicle. It's going to make it easier to track once I start making mods.

sweet... expect the removal of the luggage rack to make a bigger impact than you thought. I'd guess another 2mpg or so.

Of course it's difficult to tell from one tank with so much variability between tanks.

BTW, vacuum leaks can be a real problem for many aspects of the engine, including the gas mileage. Glad it's taken care of :)

Another example of proper maintainence - good find ! I know as fact that some elusive issues can be fixed by a simple replacement of vac lines . Most people don't realize they are not a life of the car part should be inspected / replaced as needed every oil change.

Oh, the luggage rack. That hasn't happened yet. Combination of bad weather and cheap screwdriver. I gave up. I will try my heavy duty power screwdriver next time.
