New Member with 06 5-Spd Corolla S
 

Hi everyone,

I ran across an ad on MSN.com about this Wayne Gerdes guy and thought It sounded fascinating. So, I figured the next step would be to join a forum like this so I can learn more.

I'm from Central Massachusetts and live 62.3 miles from work. I have been getting about 35MPG which is about 3.5 Gallons or $10.68 per day $213.60 per month at $3/Gal.

This is the reason I traded in my Avalon for the Corolla last year. Too much money. Even $213/Mo is too much. I'm hoping I can learn more about this here and lower that bill.

Welcome! only 35mpg? What kind of speeds are you driving at, The corolla should be getting over 40 hwy.

Well the 35MPG is based on 80MPH, AC constantly on and kinda poor driving habits.

Now I leave little earlier for work and drive 50-55, nuetral coasting as much as possible, maxed air pressure, switched to K&N air filter(old one very dirty), fresh oil change, very slow(Maybe even too slow?) acceleration from stop, let the mph fall slowly uphills, time lights and hills much better, no AC/radio/fan etc...

But come on, could this be real?
Tonight I got 60.91MPG??? and have averaged 54.47 for the week.
I top off the tank in the morning, basically until it keeps clicking every second, drive to work, errands and then home, next day drive to the same gas station and fill up the same way again and divide the trip odometer reading by the gallons pumped in. I figure it's not perfect, but after a week it would average out. and here I am at 54.47 average.
Is this normal for what an 06 Corolla could get?

That sounds a little high, I would beware the error filling up so often. Get a scangauge and fill up after at least 250-300 miles.

I should note that I live in the boondocks about 7 miles and only one stop sign between me and the highway.
then it's all open highway as I work 11AM - 6PM and I work at the New England Journal of Medicine, which is only about 1 mile off the highway.
So basically on kinda lucky days I could get to work with only coming to a complete stop 3 times.
Leaving a little earlier helped me miss some light lunch traffic..

Given all this does it still seem too high?
Next week I plan on running it down to fumes to see what I get for a whole tank....

What kind of RPMs are you running? It's not unheard of, but I'm a bit skeptical with the S and all that.

Who knows though! I still say get a scangauge.
