Sable Idle Speed

I fannally got my f/e up to 25 mph avg on the last 4 fill ups. I changed the plugs wires fuel filter, and air filter. But now the check engine light is on and the Idle seems a little high about 2500 rpm at park. I only seen it below 1000 once and that was at a stop light yesturday, but most of the time it stays at 2500 or above. oh yeah it is causing a premature shift at times.

Garage Entry

Hi...

I'd recommend a garage entry so we know what year the Sable is, engine, etc.

2500 is awful high -- that has to be racing! When you shift into Drive from a stop, does it lurch and take off? How about stopped at lights -- does it require a lot extra brake pedal pressure?

It should idle around 600-800 -- are you sure it's 2500???

I'd check your Throttle Position Sensor(TPS) as well as the Idle Air Controller(IAC) .

97 Mecury Sable 3.0 V6 # 3 speed trans with overdrive. Especally in the morning. I notices after it warms up it goes down alittle bit. 2000 RPM almost all the time except at traffic lights it slow to about 1000. I had Lumina z-34that was worse, I never did get that one fixed. I just want to prevent this car from gettung that bad.

Sounds like the IAC to me . I'm not a mechanic though . iirc they are less than $30 at Autozone .
