Gearboxes

Hurray for electric motorcycles.

I've looked through a lot of electric motorcycle conversions and they're really neat. Especially the fact you can use pricier batteries because you don't have to buy so many. Perhaps somebody can answer a question though, why do electric motorcycles never use gearboxes? Electric cars do, so it always seemed weird to me that motorcycle conversions never have them.

My guess is that for thier intended purpose 50mph is fast enough and a single speed keeps it simple and "cheap". For those of us that need to go faster for the freeway a 2-speed will be needed.

I am a little puzzled though that they didn't make this freeway capable for 12 grand. Geez, who wants a bike that can't get on the slab?

I'm still waiting for one with a 80 mile range at 65 mph. They're getting closer.

This isn't very usefull because of the cost. To recover that 12k investment you better do a lot of riding. If that thing was around 3k it would be nice but not for 12k.

Hello -

This part is interesting :

For our ride, the power level was set to the 40% minimum, for which Brammo claims a realistic range of 40 to 50 miles between charges (far exceeding the 29-mile average U.S. commute).
For me at 35 miles, this means I would need to plug it in at work. I wonder if my job would charge me for the juice?

Maybe the max speed/range could be improved with aero mods?

Try GPR. They have a supermotard style bike that will do a claimed 62 mph, and with lithium batteries has a 60 mile range. The base price for lead acid batteries is under $6,000. I bet that it comes in under $12K with lithiums.
