fill up question

What is the right way to fill up and get a mpg rating.. I just fill mine until it stops the first time. Prob not the most accurate but sitting there clicking that damn handle gets annoying. Too me at least

If you calculate your mpg with fill ups (like me) I think the main point is being consistent. When I get the first 'click' I then proceed to fill it up till the next easy to pay number. As long as I do this every time I figure on average I have a fairly decent way to calculate mpg.

I usually go about three clicks. First one at full flow, next two at reduced flow. My mileage bounces around so much that it seems to me that my tank and technique are obviously not giving me consistent fills. Oh well...

I quit at the first click. Same way every time so it's perfectly valid. More valid than super-filling the tank fill tube and then spilling some.

Consistency is the key.
Ideally, the same pump with handle squeezed the same amount.

I used to go for a 2nd click but I changed to stopping at the first click. It's too easy to go for a 3rd click and end up spilling gas. Or you park in a hot location after filling (I fill up just before parking at work), the gas expands, ends up overflowing. So now I stop at the first click. Every time, so my fills are consistent.

I used to get wacky readings even with the same drivng conditions. Turns out the "one click" varies ALOT from pump to pump. Now I fill up at the same pump and the same gas station regaurdless of price.
