The Best RPM for civic ?
 

I drive Civic EX '03 1.7L, 5 speed. What are the best RPM to change gears for the best fuel efficiency? I'm changing at 2400 RPM and that's the exact half of my engine maximum torque. My father is telling me, that is too low and I'll damage my transmission. Is he right???

I wouldn't say that is too low on that car, it won't harm the transmission. Your civic is going to rev higher than my v8 but I shift at 1500 rpm's sometimes.

I don't know the answer to the most efficient rpm, but it won't harm your transmission ;)

I usually shift between 1200-1500 rpms. When I merge uphill I shift around 2500rpms if there is traffic. You will not hurt you engine or trans. You want the engine turning the lowest rpms without bucking or missing. My engine likes to be above 850-900rpms when accelerating.

no no it wont hurt your trans. if you shift and the engine doesnt run smoothly then you are shifting too early. if its not, then you are fine.

honda engines are pretty unique in that almost all of them feel pretty gutless below 2000rpm. when i had my civics fuel saving shifting never let the rpms drop under 1500 rpm and i never let the motor rev over 2200rpm(those who know me on this board know that this is rare). the bottom line is hondas do like to rev high and they are not v8s. but 2400 is definitely not the lowest reliable shifting point.
