Clutch or no clutch?
Is there currently a discussion on here about the pros/cons of using a clutch on an EV conversion? If not, let's start one! From what I can see, here's a short list of advantages/disadvantages of using a clutch on an EV conversion.
Advantages: Allows easier shifting Saves synchros Disadvantages: Heavier (both static and rotating mass) More complicated Wear items (clutch disk, throw-out bearing) Easier to accidentally over-speed motor (debatable) I really do like the idea of being able to shift smoothly all the fly, while still being able to keep my left foot comfortably on the floor as I inch along through heavy traffic. Is it worth it for the extra complexity though? Also, will the DE bearing hold up to the pressure of the pressure plate pressing against it? How is this normally done in conversions where the clutch is retained? Experiences? Thoughts? Ideas? Thanks! |
I vote FOR clutch. It doesn't seem like a lot of extra complexity if you are doing a conversion, since all the parts are there.
