An older member of my family switches off OD for city driving. Unfortunately, offering the same info you did had no effect.

Just curious Ben... are you talking to this guy strictly in Japanese? Are you finding that living there is really helping your language skills?

My fiance's father is a bit tougher. In fact, when he came here and was going to be driving my mom's RX400h, he asked where the button was. I told him, that this was a FE-focused car, and that a button like that (OD manual override
) would not be on the car. Haha... he is reallllly insane though. He is a cop, and he floors it (literally, 100% throttle) any time that he presses the gas. What is even worse, is that he does this constantly. He will floor it, then release, floor it and release. It actually makes my fiance's older sister throw up when we drive with him in his diesel van.

Good job on converting an ojisan. How the hell you were able to pull that off is beyond me. I don't even bother with them anymore.

Seems like I remember the first US cars to have the overdrive option had tons of problems. To keep them from breaking folks learned to leave them off.

"Geezer" or "codger" should suffice. :-)

When driving through the mountains I always turn overdrive off. Of course, if I'm driving a manual that's a problem I don't have to worry about :D
