Hey!! I recently got around to building a 88 honda civic "gassaver". I just finished installing a VX engine with the full obd1 conversion. I will post my gas mileage once I start driving it.

$60 bucks. I install engines for a jdm importer.. lol

This is a picture the previous owner sent me. I'll have to take some pictures tomorrow. I bought "new" carpet, seats, vx wheels, cluster, clock and steering wheel. I bought it for $200, and expect to have under a $1000 into it.

Hey.. My friend has been driving my 89 dx (vx engine) and it’s only getting 35-38 mpg city. I was hoping for more. I told him to shift under 2500 rpm.
I think the real problem is the DX tranny. I can’t use the vx tranny because it uses a hydraulic clutch system. HF crx's are rare in Canada, I have only seen one in my life. Does anyone have a HF tranny for sale? (I'll make a post in the marketplace.) Thanks, |
The HF tranny should help a bunch...I wonder if something else is up though...

I would not be surprised if the ecu isn't going into lean burn mode, because the rpm isn't low enough, for the speed. Their is a thread a while back which explains how to use a voltmeter to monitor the oxygen sensor, to tell when the engine is going into the lean burn mode. Without the engine going into lean burn and with a DX transmission, that mileage is probably about what your going to get.
I would have your friend drive it with the rpm at or under 2500 and see how it does. I would think that he could still drive 50 or so and get the controller to allow it to go into lean burn. On your transmission, you should be looking for an 88-91 HF transmission. The 89-91 will work, but you will need a pressure plate and clutch to go with the year of the transmission, which may not be an 88. |

Well I parked my s2000 so I'll be driving the civic. I'm not sure if my friend "babied" it.
I dont really care what year HF tranny I get, I have several clutch sets. This DX tranny revs @ 3000ish at 60mph ...damn! I used the dx axles and mounts. You need to modify (trim) the timing belt cover so you can use the engine 89 civic bracket. Other than that it drops right in. The wiring was crazy.. I think I added 14+ wires to the ecu. 4 - the dpfi to mpfi 2 - vtec 5 - 02 sensor 1 - egr * plus I tapped in 2 wires (from the tps) for the + and - 2 - egr box ? umm.. I'm sure there is more! I'll have to take more pictures, feel free to ask any questions! Mrmad when did you live in Calgary? |
I saw your car going back from the airport today. Little red 78ish Honda. Cutest little thing! Was impressed in how good shape it was in.

35-38 city normal driving is pretty good. It takes a little time to adjust your driving style and get the mileage up. Driving style is the single biggest mileage improver. I found that over time my shift rpm dropped from 2500rpms to 1300rpms.
Also you might consider a superMID. |
Its starting to get cold in Calgary. I noticed it takes awhile for my car to heat up, even after installing a new thermostat. The stock 89 rad is twice the size of the vx rad. So.. I'm going to do a grill/rad block on it today. :)
