They're all BS, don't waste your money. Just use Shell or Chevron gas.

mathowie 08-12-2008 05:25 AM

Yeah, Mythbusters did a whole show on them and found no big improvements.

Einar 08-12-2008 11:11 AM

Why Shell or Chevron? Better MPG? If so, is it veriable?

Einar 08-12-2008 11:12 AM

Sorry, typo. Meant to say verifiable.

all fuel in Oregon is now the same E-10 blend, and has less BTU energy than last years fuels did- do a 3% drop in mileage is common. as mandated by hB2210

ok...well wut about additives?? the article itself says that the DEVICES are all bull**** but:

"These [devices] should not be confused with fuel system and valve cleaner additives which remove contaminants from the fuel system and/or remove deposits on intake valves."

so apparently these types of additves seem to work but, again, which ones???

bradlittlefield 08-13-2008 05:44 AM

Any money you spend on additives will offset the savings in fuel you MIGHT get. if you get 1 mpg better... you'll save what.. 1.50-2.00 each fill... the additives only work for a fill or a few, and they all go for like 7.00+. Doesn't seem worth potentially harming you're car when you're not saving any money anyway.

I'm no where near an extremist, but, is the dollar difference worth the environment though? Crappy running car hurts more than a clean running car.

NGK platinum spark plugs made a noticeable difference in my car ('93 Accord) for both smoothness of drive and gas mileage (about 2-3 mpg in the average week).

I've heard from MANY people that K & N brand air filters offer decent improvements in mpg and horsepower. Have yet to use one myself as they are very expensive (about $50 for my car). However, this cost is offset by the fact that the filter is reusable, all you do is clean it every 50,000 miles I think. The filter itself carries a million mile guarantee.

I've also gotten good results out of the Lucas brand fuel and oil additives, with no apparent damage to my fuel system.

I use one of the brand name concentrated fuel injector or fuel system cleaners every oil change - 3750 miles. I'll use STP or Gumout or Lucas, whchever is available at Wal-Mart while I'm grocery shopping. My 4 year old Mazda 6 Sport Wagon is still getting 29 MPG + on every tank.

Also try a tank or 2 of every major brand name. I don't know why but I always get the best mileage on Citgo 87. I've heard that some of the no name gas at convenience stores actually has more cleaners in it but I don't know anything about any of the stores in my area or the gas they sell to recommend trying any.

I put a can of Berryman's in the gas tank every time I change the oil (about every 3500 miles). Seems to keep the injectors and valves clean. I don't put any other additives in the the oil or gas.

If I can find brand name fully synthetic oil on sale I'll use it on occasion. If it's too costly, it's not going to pay me back.

I use synthetic oil and only change it every 7.5k miles (govt studies on school buses recommend this) as well as trying to use higher quality gas (chevron, BP, Mobil, etc) and according to fuelly I have some of the best mileage of my car type. This may have to do with the type of driving that I am doing, but the past two months have been almost entirely city driving so I kinda doubt it.

When I changed my plugs last I didn't get platinum plugs as recommended by the manual and I think there was a 2-3 MPG diff but I don't have data to back that up, so take that with a grain of salt.

And lastly, as for the K & N brand filters, even if it doesn't add to the MPG you still never have to buy a filter again, since you jsut have to clean it and put it back.
