Traffic Light Fuel Waste
 

Last week on WBAL TV news they ran a small segment on fuel wasted sitting at red lights. It said, if traffic lights were sequenced the average motorist would save $240 a year on gas, there would be 40 million less tons of Co2 produced annually, and a motorist would get 40% overall better mpg. The article said the nation as a whole has gone from a D- to a D in in its overall rating of fuel wasted sitting at red lights.

I know from driving deliveries in Los Angeles California for 4 years that all city traffic lights are timed at 45 seconds, this is a very efficient traffic pace. Now here in Baltimore Maryland the lights are timed at 1:30 and traffic is slow. A group sued the city to change the timing of the lights, they won the suit, but nothing was done, the city said they dont have the money to have crews reset all those lights.

Sequenced or not a faster light time would save fuel, but it must be a national program to save the maximum amount of fuel and cut smog.

I tryed to recover the arcticle from WBAL, but they said their time limit had run out on the story, contact the Associated Press. I went through the AP search and it could not find anything on the article.
